The latest on his magnum opus Thurrock investigation (which I note has now been running for *six* years) here: www.thebureauinvestigates.com/stories/2026...
thebureauinvestigates.com
Question mark hangs over Thurrock’s accounts five years on
More than 1,800 days after an objection was submitted, auditors still can’t say whether the authority’s accounts were lawful

Always fun when @garethtbij.bsky.social gets sassy
A screenshot from an article that reads: Michelangelo needed just three years to carve his sculpture of David from Italian marble, and it took only four years from the first uncrewed Apollo mission for Nasa to put a man on the moon.

Both feats of human achievement were completed in less time than the five years (and counting) it has taken auditors to deal with an objection to the accounts of crisis-hit Thurrock Council.

Auditors at the firm BDO have admitted they are still unable to respond to an objection that was submitted about the council’s 2020/21 accounts more than 1,800 days ago – longer than it took the Beatles to write, record and release eight consecutive number-one albums.

this is excellent
stigmatizing Rowling’s weaponization of childhood not only requires personal withdrawal for most people, it necessitates something much more difficult: being a giant fucking killjoy. You should tell people discussing the show that you’re not watching it, and why, and you should let yourself openly cringe at your sister-in-law’s Harry Potter tote bag, and you should bring up unprompted that the onslaught of legislation against trans people makes you sad and angry, presuming it does, and you should do this because, not despite, the fact that it will make you look annoying as hell and may make everyone present uncomfortable. (You probably won’t even get the kudos of looking like a cool ally, because you’re still ultimately talking about Harry Potter. Sorry about that.)

Powerful and important letter about artificial so-called intelligence from Sheila Hayman from Minderoo Centre for Technology and Democracy, University of Cambridge, in the FT today
Margaret McGirr’s letter (“AI can lend a hand, but it will struggle to replace one”, July 21) and Chine McDonald’s guest column (“This retro revival is more than a longing for the past”, Opinion, August 7) both touch (sic) on something that should be obvious, but is carefully ignored by almost everyone in the tech world. Namely that our intelligence is embodied, evolved and biological, and inseparable from our bodies.
The brain’s job is to control the body in the world; it is the last organ to develop.
Every square centimetre of our hands (and of the rest of our skin) contains about a 170 touch sensors or nerve endings, sensitive to different kinds of touch: a slap, a burn, a caress, a hug — each of which travels to different parts of the midbrain, prompting the appropriate response. Quickly to the autonomic nervous system for something dangerous; more slowly via a different channel for something carrying meaning.
In addition to the hand’s limitless versatility, it is self-repairing, regulates its own temperature, knows without being programmed how much pressure to exert on an egg, a tennis ball or a day-old chick, and can fuse neurologically to whatever it holds.
So when we put a glass down on the table or slide a knife through an apple, we feel the table, or the apple, not the glass or handle in our hand (try it!).
Finally, and most urgently, the entire human body — including the hands — does everything on 25 or so watts of completely renewable energy: a tiny fraction of what a humanoid robot, even one of the current primitive iteration of robots, needs.
The “retro revival” is thus not cultural nostalgia.
It’s millions of years of evolution crying out to be heard, before we suppress it totally in the service of an automated — and dead — planet.

the concern with the Arday story isn’t the fact of the media coverage, it’s the volume. it’s perfectly reasonable that there would be some coverage of the story, and basically indefensible that there was as much as there was.

It's such a missed opportunity given the profusion of massive Victorian cemeteries across London. The City of London model is really cool, especially the headstone reuse that keeps the original marker preserved (and offers a great chance to archive the details)
