Likely more about opportunity cost. They needed Achane to return RB1 numbers to be 'in'. Here, you can hope for RB2/3 numbers, which might be manageable on volume.

Would you expect a similar trend to what we've seen with WRs over recent years (several that matter, the rest are interchangeable)? For some reason people seem to have stronger takes on the differences for the players in the RB13-RB36 ranges than they do for WRs.

I'm confused. Diego Pavia & Eli Stowers succeeded against an SEC schedule. Pavia went undrafted... so Stowers is judged to have been the reason for the success DESPITE not having NFL caliber QB play. Kenyon Sadiq topped out at 560 yards... with Dante Moore, who was a projected 1st Round talent.

IMO, AMERICAN football has a larger ability to adjust for what you neeed (run/pass, FG/4th), whereas soccer doesn't have a lot of adjustment, it's just execution in the shootout. So the gains of having more info are negated by the lack of adjustments.

Generally shooting first is better. There are studies on the psychology of it that show there is added stress and slightly worse results shooting second.
