Last art of the year! #SciArt As a fun pastime on my Christmas break, I looked into basal ceratopsians a bit and doodled them. Turns out they vary from cuddly little guys to beasts that would have made a mighty (and very bitey) steed. Close-ups of each one in thread 🧵:
A panorama-shaped collage of digital drawings of six species of basal ceratopsian dinosaurs, with a 170 cm tall human for scale. They are smallish dinosaurs (ranging from 10 to 600 kilos) with strong, parrotlike bills and ornamental quill-like protofeathers on their backs and/or tails.

It strikes me that the new Mutaburrasaurus skull study reveals how weird its jaw was, trying to depict it was complicated and I think I'm not doing justice with that

this week's #Paleostream flocking was themed around the Walking With series of palaeontology documentaries to honour the late Ben Bartlett who passed yesterday we sketched Ornithocheirus, Brontoscorpio, Liopleurodon, and Koolasuchus #AusPalaeo
an Ornithocheirus catches the wind and hovers in place for a second, it stares into the setting sun to the left of the camera

Ornithocheirus is a fragmentary sea-fairing pterosaur which had large crests on the tip of its snout

it's most well known for appearing as the protagonist of the Walking With Dinosaurs episode 'Giant of the Skies' which follows an older malea Brontoscorpio walks along in shallow brackish water, branches and detritus coat the bottom, and aquatic plants can be seen growing in the back

Brontoscorpio is a dubious scorpion only known from the tip of one of its claws, while some have proposed it to be a large crustacean, i have decided to reconstruct it as a scorpion similar to Waeringoscorpio which looked almost identical to modern scorpions, except having gill filaments behind its legs rather than book lungs. in life, Brontoscorpio may have been around 70cm long from cephalon to the tip of its telson stretched out

it's most well known for being an antagonist of the Walking With Monsters episode 'Water Dwellers' being a recurring species throughout the episodea Liopleurodon swims close to the bottom of the shallow ocean it inhabits, a school of belemnites avoid the larger animal (though it isnt interested in them). underneath the Liopleurodon, a juvenile Thalattosuchus chases after the belemnites, staying wary of the apex predator above it (though the Liopleurodon has no interest in it either, maybe in a few more years though)

belemnites are cephalopods which possessed hard internal elements used to help regulate buoyancy

Thalattosuchus is a kind of marine crocodile which had a tail fluke similar to ichthyosaurs, reduced arms, and long flipper-like legs

Liopleurodon is a large pliosaur (short-necked plesiosaur) which was large and barrel chested with a length of around 5m long. it had log interlocking (but not splaying) teeth which would've been used to take down large prey, and large front and hind flippers used to propell it through the water

it appeared in the Walking With Dinosaurs episode 'Cruel Sea' as a recurring antagonist, though being very oversizeda Koolasuchus waits underneath the water, waiting for the sun to warm it up enough for the large beast to move. dried Zamites leaves and other assorted bits float on the surface of the water, winter is approaching and soon the Koolasuchus will need to find a safe place to hibernate

Koolasuchus is a large temnospondyl and the last of the large non-lissamphibian temnospondyls, it is only known from a jaw bone, but its possible life apperance can be inferred from its close relative Siderops

it is most well known for its appearence in the Walking With Dinosaurs episode 'Spirits of the Ice Forest' where it appears as a reccuring character/minor antagonist

results of this week's #Paleostream flocking! this week we sketched Tapejara, Ajkaceratops, Hoplitomeryx, and Protoceratops (i procrasinated on posting whoops) #paleoart #sketches #sciart
a Tapejara opens its mouth to yawn as the dawn's light bathes it in a gentle warm hue. the setting moon appears to be in its beak due to the framing of the shot. the sky behind the pterosaur is a deep clear blue as the night retreats from the day

Tapejara is a kind of tapejarid pterosaur (pterosaurs with large fleshy crests from the front of their face to the back oftentimes paired with smaller ones on the bottom of their beaks) that inhabited Cretaceous Brazil, here ive depicted it with a healed injury on its crest at the backan angry Ajkaceratops charges towards the camera while a shocked seated person (my sona) recoils in fear (i am 5' 4" (~163cm) tall)

Ajkaceratops is a genus of ceratopsian dinosaur (relatives of Triceratops) known only from skull material, unlike it's better known relatives it may or may not have had a frill proper and also lacks a distinct rostral bone which is a characteristic of virtually all ceratopsiansa male Hoplitomeryx is seated amongst some short grass at the edge of a game trail, the morning sun carpets the foreground and midground of the shot in a bright yellow light while the heavily foliaged background remains in relative cool darkness. the small ungulate has swivelled its neck around to look at the camera

Hoplitomeryx is a kind of small deer-like ungulate that had five large horns on its head; two behind each of its eyes and one between its eyes on the middle of its head. they also possessed small fangs much like fanged-deer as well as scent glands infront of the eyes like most ruminants. they lived in Italy during a time in Earth's history where the sea levels covered most lowlying areas, forming islands that are now attached to the mainland in the modern daya Protoceratops kicks up fine sandy dust as it walks towards the camera, it's illuminated from the back by a bright yellow light as this shot is set at night

Protoceratops is one of the most well known ceratopsians dinosaurs behind Triceratops due to being one of the two species in the 'Dueling Dinosaurs' fossil where a Velociraptor and Protoceratops were preserved mid fight by a falling dune. Protoceratops lacked any horns, but had a very wide and broad crest, as well as a raised "sail" on the top of its tail

A Presence at the Shore of Hațeg Island... (February 2024)
A herd of Telmatosaurus walks across a beach. Two of the individuals in the herd are moving out of frame, while a mother and her calf are seen in full. The giant pterosaur Hatzegopteryx is flying overhead, though its body is completely out of our view. What can be seen is the shadow it casts over the beach and the herd.

Three gorgonopsids howl (?) at the night sky and the moon, inspired by the famous Three Wolf Moon shirt. The gorgons are in rougly the same positions and colorways as the original shirt, with a white/arctic color morph on top. a amber colored morph in the middle and a melanistic one on the bottom. The background is a gassy nebula or clouds, take your pick lol.
