Despite the numerous statistical, sociological, and anecdotal evidence that women are treated as 2nd class in #STEM spaces and that this benefits the patriarchy (because women do the grunt work while the managers can collect larger salaries and not dirty their hands with math).

#STEM is very much a patriarchal institution. Women consciously and unconsciously follow its rulebook. Then, when they don't make major discoveries? The women get blamed not the institution.

Much of $$ advice focused on women saving money rather than earning it; ways to earn money were men’s advice’. Women canned, made crafts, sewed for money. Read more on my #substack: feministscientist.substack.com/p/home-econo...

Despite its history of male-domination—from corporate to the lab—many beauty companies have recently been trying to tout “equity”—only after being called out by social media campaigns.

#Sexism in #STEM careers is common, especially #engineering and tech (where 50% of women leave by age 35). Here are common 'myths' you might hear that obscure the true inequality in the fields.

Learn #coding ! Data compression: Very important for images. Small details are removed in “lossy’ compression that are naked to the human eye but make the file smaller and easier to send. #feministengineering_coding

When I took the #SAT, not only did we have to write an essay, but we got a ¼ point off for wrong answers, had to read long passages, & had to take 3 SAT subject tests for college admissions. All this has been removed. Reading passages are < 150 words, no essay, & SAT subject tests are eliminated.

Engineering is supposed to guarantee economic security. Yet, the paygap in engineering is real. Women are less likely to be promoted, and more likely to leave by 35 NOT because they have kids but because of the culture. swe.org/research/202...

Perhaps scarred by George Orwell’s creepy computers in the novel 1984, tech companies were eager to brand themselves as user friendly and non-threating (i.e., we won’t spy on you or steal your data). In Apple’s 1984 commercial #computers were liberators, not oppressors.
