I’d seen mention of the raid, but Reuters reports it was related to the immigration paperwork her father filed decades ago. This is another salvo in the admin’s effort to indicate to every immigrant, whether they’ve since naturalized, whether they’ve become a member of Congress, that we aren’t safe

US authorities conducted a predawn Monday raid on the Washington-area home of Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar as part of an ongoing investigation, the Justice Department said.

I kept thinking the Cuni guy (Bronx shooter) looked familiar and then I realized I saw him last year at the ICE raid in Chinatown, where he was pretty front and center. Dude loves the attention

This is going to be a real test of both whether the mayor is willing to take concrete action that is squarely within the city’s power to investigate and, if reasonable, prosecute a federal agent; and whether the NYPD is willing to go through with that. I wrote about the process here

Prosecuting ICE’s Goons Will Be Hard—but Not Impossible
To a growing number of Americans, the necessity of holding the fashy agency to account is becoming obvious. Better start planning how to do it now.

Even if your assumption is Musk is a net positive for the U.S. (a very shaky premise) he obviously did not receive an H-1B as *today's* Musk, and as has been extensively covered, would have been detained and deported for his unlawful presence and work under policies he and Vance both support now

Just a reminder: Tillis persuaded the woman Hegseth allegedly raped to come forward with her story, and told her that if she did, it would sink the nomination. She did. At great risk to herself. Tillis then cast the deciding vote for Hegseth. Because he’s a goddamned coward.

I’ve had lots of productive conversations with I disagree with. But there are many, many people with whom the idea of a useful discussion of ideological distinctions is dead in the water from the get-go
050
Felipe De La Hoz @felipedlh.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
b) values distinctions were like “role of government funding in a nation’s cultural production” and not “should this demographic have civil rights” c) the contemporary right was at all interested in good faith discussion as opposed to weaponized grievance. Unfortunately we don’t live in that world

Felipe De La Hoz @felipedlh.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Maybe I’m talking the bait but I’ll grant that this is an in theory useful approach in an environment where a) extreme polarization and a degraded information economy didn’t make people entirely resistant to countervailing facts and able to trivially source whatever facts they shared
160
Felipe De La Hoz @felipedlh.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Still, that doesn’t mean judges shouldn’t try at all, particularly if they’re interested in retaining some authority as an independent branch of government. They could in theory appoint an outside prosecutor if DOJ won’t take it, and civil contempt could be used to strip officials of immunities

Judges Have One Defense Against Trump They (Mostly) Haven’t Used Yet
Judicial contempt is a tool few jurists have reached for to curb the administration’s misrule—and for good reason. But that may be about to change.

As I found out when I looked into criminal contempt for defiance of the courts, actually pursuing this route is extremely difficult not least because this is a federal crime, meaning a) the judge would typically have to get a DOJ prosecutor to pursue it and b) Trump could just pardon it

"Oh but she didn't come in the right way!" Newsflash, if you go digging you can find fault with almost all immigration applications because our laws are insane. Also you'll notice that "they didn't come in the right way so we should deport them" is the exact same argument as MAGA makes

It was fucked up when people said it about Melania, it's still fucked up now. You either want a hyper-punitive society in which noncitizens are inherently second class or you don't, and if you don't, then very much undermine your point with this stuff

We'll have to wait to see the adjudicative effect of this public charge expansion; like the 2019 version, it may have negligible impact on actual green card denials. That unfortunately doesn't mean it won't have massive narrative and practical impact as noncitizens pull back from public services

It’s one more manifestation of their approach to everything, which is that their “rationalist” view is sacrosanct, human needs are illogical, there should be shortcuts and “efficiency” for everything, and that there is no collective responsibility

2) They understood they had to disregard the wishes and evade the defenses of the information sources to engage in that theft 3) They grasped this as an effort to effectively replace those sources and, in all likelihood, kill them off 4) They knew that this would kill their own information sources
