Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the U.S. has launched “Project Freedom” to escort stranded ships out of the Persian Gulf, claiming “almost 23,000 civilians from 87 different countries” have been left “trapped… and left for dead” by Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
Rubio said “these are innocent bystanders… being held hostage,” adding that “at least 10 civilian sailors have already died.” He said “nations have asked [the U.S.] to help free their ships,” and claimed President Trump “has stepped up… answered the call for help” by creating a “protective bubble under which they can operate and move product”— calling it “the first step at reopening the Strait.”
