Anyone have suggestions on an assembly syntax for manual branch prediction hints? (As in, marking a branch as being likely or unlikely to be taken) Even though the Pentium 4 actually implemented branch prediction hints, I can't find a single example of assembly syntax for it for any architecture

Honestly lobste.rs having the "vibecoding" tag for any post involving using AI or written with AI makes it pretty damn good for the reason I use those news aggregators at all: finding cool blog posts that I never would've found otherwise (I often completely ignore the comments on Lobsters and HN)

the thing about programming is that the core skill is being able to mentally model what the computer is doing. If you can't do that, you'll never have a chance. i don't think traditional programming classes teach this well. ironically, puzzle games do a good job at it...

Hmm, I wonder if any (vaguely) contemporary FPUs have trig/transcendental functions that are approximations even in the range of the float type, rather than (barring bugs) fully-accurate except for the least-significant bit like any FPU I've looked at (or I think technically ±~1.5 ulp is common)
