The BBC Charter Renewal offers an unmissable opportunity to put the public in charge of Public Service Media, and enable it to reshape the media commons. In the increasingly troubled 21st century this is a strategic necessity.

In the 1990s #BBC staff were building community-based digital social media. They were blocked. We got Silicon Valley #BigTech instead. The BBC should be contributing to and building public digital infrastructure and Public AI — not renting space on extractive platforms.

Federico Gaggio @federico.eurosky.social · 09/03/2026
The #BBC's public purposes are good and can be strengthened by focusing on universality, media literacy and public empowerment, epistemic security, and a mandate to act as an anchor institution for the UK's wider media ecosystem.
100 1
Federico Gaggio @federico.eurosky.social · 09/03/2026
The Green Paper's proposed to revise new public purposes. While the #BBC contributes almost £5 billion to the economy annually, making "growth" a goal shifts focus from citizens to consumers.
100 1
Federico Gaggio @federico.eurosky.social · 09/03/2026
The Green Paper proposes advertising and subscriptions. Terrible idea. Ads drag the #BBC into surveillance ad-tech, and increase competition with commercial broadcasters in a declining market. Subscriptions create a two-tier service. Both turn citizens into consumers.
120 2
Federico Gaggio @federico.eurosky.social · 09/03/2026
Funding must be universal, guaranteed, and set by an independent commission — not the Treasury. The #BBC's budget has been cut 30–40% in real terms since 2010. We need to shift from 'sustainable' (aka managed decline) to *adequate*.
100 1
Federico Gaggio @federico.eurosky.social · 09/03/2026
The #BBC should answer to citizens, not politicians. @danhind and others propose a Public Service Cooperative. @VLVuk proposes a Public Media Commission. Those who pay for the BBC should govern it.
100 1
Federico Gaggio @federico.eurosky.social · 09/03/2026
The #BBC should be fully independent, free from political capture. A "Forever Charter" would place it on a permanent statutory footing so it never again has to beg for its own life from the government of the day.
100 1
Federico Gaggio @federico.eurosky.social · 09/03/2026
The #BBC is not just a broadcaster. It is civic infrastructure — underpinning our shared reality in a time when the information space is being colonised by commercial interests hostile to the public good.
