Since President Trump took over the Kennedy Center, the institution has borrowed everything its bank would lend it, dipped into money donors had given on the condition it never be spent and written off pledges from supporters who stopped paying. By @federicacocco.bsky.social & @naemas.bsky.social:

The Kennedy Center was solvent when Trump took over. Then its finances collapsed.
The Post examined 15 years of the institution’s financial records to see why it went south after the president took over.

Some unintended consequences I suspect the rise of AI agents will create: 1. Restaurants that only take reservations by hand written letter, or more likely, don't take them at all. 2. Gigs where you can only buy tickets in person. 3. Businesses that operate without websites.

Conrad Miles saved about $200,000 for his retirement years, as well as earning a pension with the Santa Fe Railroad. But after he moved into assisted living, his savings were “gone in a heartbeat,” his daughter said. When he died at age 93, he had about $30,000 left. Below: Conrad and Marion Miles

Economists have talked about it as the greatest wealth transfer in history. But generational wealth is obliterated for many by the astronomical costs of elder care. The poorest Americans spent nearly a third of their wealth on out-of-pocket care costs. www.washingtonpost.com/business/202...

They sold Jimmy’s house and belongings. Then, along with Tim’s sister and brother-in-law, they agreed to contribute $1,000 per couple each month. Amy Dillon is a public school teacher. Tim Dillon, who retired from firefighting in 2017, went back to work as a medical courier.

“We have liquidated everything my dad worked for his entire life, and we’re going to give it to the corporation,” he said.

Americans can’t stop betting parlays. Sportbooks are cashing in.
As betting booms, parlays are accounting for an increasing share of the money wagered on sports, according to a Washington Post analysis of state data.
