Somebody just casually described a cake to me as “more of a Winter cake”, which I think is a common classification among bakers? Listen buddy you can have your ontology but if this is an attempt to regulate which cakes I’m allowed to have when then I’ll have you know I will not be tethered

Ok I see that in the context of the article my comments are a tangent. Still I think these are interesting distinctions that are not made often enough in these discussions. But I think your point stands as is in this context.

Of course you could also kind of turn this around and say the onus is on the researcher designing the artificial situation/phenomenon to argue convincingly that it is relevant to understand the broader natural capacity they are interested in
110
Federico Adolfi @fedeadolfi.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
Otoh if you’re trying to find special situations where the system behaves in a way that distinguishes between hypothesized mechanisms, then the fact that the problem you create and the associated C don’t play any role in natural environments is not a relevant consideration a priori
110
Federico Adolfi @fedeadolfi.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
Yes that’s what I thought you were saying. I’m suggesting none of this is an issue except relative to some unstated goal or background assumption. I could see this being an issue if, say, you were trying to characterize a capacity C in the lab but the problem you create doesn’t match any natural C

I thought you were taking issue with the fact that the input/environment is unnatural and the artificial manipulation that gives rise to it. But under the rationale I was trying to describe this is not by itself a problem

Federico Adolfi @fedeadolfi.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
More charitable: “we created a situation that cannot naturally occur so that vision is confused in a way we believe will help distinguish between candidate accounts of the mechanism at play in natural situations” It might be (more) interesting/productive to argue against this rationale too

If you turn something into a benchmark with quantifiable rewards and progress metrics, don’t be surprised when the machines achieve dominance there. At that point it will be too late to gesture at intrinsic non-economic values, you’ve made them illegible (in Scott’s sense) to any outside observer.

You see in math we want to be really precise and to remove any hint of ambiguity. Any questions? 🙋🏻‍♂️ good question ok that p is a probability 🙋🏽 no that other p is a mass function 🙋🏼 you’d think so but this p is a density 🙋🏿 haha no here p is a specific number Ok be rigorous out there class dismissed
