Verdict on CRYSTAL LAKE: it’s good. Takes itself too seriously the first. Then remembers it’s an F13 show. Knows when to be stupid, when to be serious, and—in a series first—knows when to be subtle & trust the audience to connect the dots. Really wormed its way into my bleeding chest cavity.

On the other, it's almost comforting and too cozy to believe in a conspiracy instead of having to face that we live and die according to the whims of rage-filled buffoons.

Right there with you, F13 pt 6 was critical in my growth as a horror enjoyer.

I see “Tim Waggoner” released another tie-in novel. Since he writes all the tie-in fiction in horror, I’m convinced that “Tim Waggoner” is actually 9 different people who are all coincidentally named Tim Waggoner.

Don’t know if the show’s any good yet. If they’re doing what I think they’re doing, I don’t think they have the balls to pull it off, but if nothing else the show is very pretty, the acting solid, and the character work ain’t bad, esp Jason.

lol, so far from what I’ve seen people either prefer THEY WILL KILL YOU or READY OR NOT 2, but not both. Which, credit to RON 2 it was wonderful seeing Sarah Michelle Gellar again and chewing the scenery to her hearts content.

I really undersold IS GOD IS by sticking it where I did. Very surreal movie without being showy. It’s the one I’ve thought about the most, outside of the top 2.

My Top 10 of the year so far. 1 & 2 switches on my mood that day, but the gap between the 2 spot and 3 is astronomical. Little bit of a down year, at least in stuff that interested me, and the stuff I’d go crazy over in previous years ended up in the honorables.

In the ‘writing is 95% execution’ file, Sarrantonio hits every single one of my pet peeves and DNF points…but because of the strength of his prose there was never a moment I wanted to put the book down. It’s like the first time seeing a lefty QB throw. Not ‘wrong,’ just different. Liked it bunches.

I really love that the WNBA finals is between two of the teamiest teams that ever teamed, the Valks more so than the Dream. It’s lowkey funny how swathes of the media struggle to discuss the Valks because no one superstar player dominates any particular category.

An eldritch abomination of indescribable and incomprehensible size (Arkham Horror, 2nd Ed) will soon rise again from a the accursed oceans of a “Game Found.” Anyway, here’s 5’6” worth of the full game board.

I have waited so long for the Baltimore Ravens, when in a bad situation, to simply go “We have Derrick Henry and you Do Not.” And then punish the other team. A beautiful, grimy, stupid, glorious win.

Cleveland has the same relationship with Deshaun Watson. The moral calculus begins with ‘is watson winning y/n?’

There’s are elements of CARRIE that resonated deeply with me like nothing else has—one line flashbacked me harder than SHINY HAPPY PEOPLE—and yet the whole time I was like “you know Flanagan’s going to fumble this.”

—get enough resources to fight. In fact, DoM reminds me of one of my all time favorite games, the absolute ball breaker GHOST STORIES, only DoM is on T-Virus. Actually, that’s a great summation of DAWN OF MADNESS—its advance GHOST STORIES with a choose-your-adventure horror novel. Love it!

So when a monster is spawned, instead of a predetermined ‘class,’ you draw three random tokens with 1 of the 25 types and that is the monster’s weakness. Bloody brilliant. Most of the lesser monsters damage sentience rather than health, meaning instead of a needed reset, the player struggles to—

—the fuel that runs the engine—the little color cubes, ie sentience. These can be used for everything from fighting monsters to rerolling dice, from soaking damage to passing event tests. So there’s 5 colors and 5 types (domains—see dice & character boards), which leads to 25 different values.

The game is very loose structure wise, something I despise post ‘Powered by the Apocalypse’ b/c rather than giving freedom, the lack of structure turns everything into a chaotic, confusing sludge. Buuuut DoM wisely knows where to have structure & where to run wild. Part of this wildness is in—

Bought DAWN OF MADNESS for the art, but I finally got a chance to play. DoM splits 3 words to name 20 distinct things, but the rulebook is also the worst I’ve read in board gaming, and on top of that, 1st time setup took 1-2 hours. So is the game worth all the annoyance? So far, that’s a hell yes.

Pretty much from the opening sentence I was like “I slept on this guy for far too long.” It really is a bloody miracle when someone like Ligotti reaches the heights they have in the past decade… because it’s seems for every Ligotti, there’s 2-3 (or more) Sarrantonios who disappear.

(Although he’s very good, Sarrantino is no where near the writer that Lee was). And you know what? DARK HARVEST and HORRORWEEN, while accurate, are terrible titles. Like some digital SOV horror slop filmed in like three rooms in a single day and destined recc’ed to death by the Tubi algo.

This book is one where, along with DARK HARVEST, the algo kept rec’ing for years and I kept saying “no way it lives up to its cover.” So far, so good. Has a touch of that Tanith Lee gift where their prose to pared to the bone and somehow oozes more atmosphere than Anne Rice.

Some of the best ideas of that era! Sometimes people wonder how I have the patience to work through some like RULE OF ROSE, and it’s like, I played beyond the first hour of SIREN. Every thing is easier after that lol.

This is one where I want to see a remake that tosses a lot of the original—the obtuseness, trial & error frustration—but preserves 100% of the story, characters, etc because I think SIREN could be considered up there with the goats of the genre. see @eurothug4000.bsky.social vids below for more

My train of thought on posting this -> so what’s the shibari WNBA team? -> their jerseys would be the rope dresses from Suspiria ‘18 -> hell, make it an Argento tribute team -> the New York Infernos -> also doubles as a classy 9/11 tribute.

This 33-year-old nurse told the FBI she knew she was “going to set him free” after border patrol agents brought in a man whose face was bloodied and seriously injured. She treated him and helped him escape, and she faces charges now. He got away, and they never relocated him.
