so yeah i WOULD genuinely be a defender of the game if it hadn't been stripped of all the interesting character, tone and story that the series was excelling at up to that point. CS is actually the one that has the more egregious gameplay issues to me, and this sentiment still holds true even there.

actually you know what? whenever i play sticker star, i genuinely have fun with it once i manage to repress how disappointed i am that we went from count bleck's Shakespearean epic to the most bland cookie cutter vanilla mario romp ever. The actual act of playing it doesn't feel bad at all.

genuinely nothing in any paper mario game is egregiously bad enough to make me turn away from a story i really like sunshine frustrates me more than any PM game gameplay-wise. weird design that might not be the most intuitive > game whose physics engine cries under the weight of its ambition

they all share the blame. tanabe and kudo could have ignored the suggestion but it was still a bad suggestion from miyamoto to request less story and a limit of only mainline characters, to the subseries that benefits the most from its rich cast of original characters and strong story.

The 2010s happened not because it was necessary for budget reasons, not because it made development easier, but because of corporate meddling. There being like one straggler from the 2000s that barely scraped by unsanitized doesn't disprove that. Yet people still insist on finding a different answer

yeah i REALLY don't get the people who defend it by saying "it was for budget reasons, staying vanilla saved them resources" like no, it took MORE new assets to make a 100%-vanilla M&L game than reuse stuff from DT, TTYD, SPM. Plus EVERY overworld sprite was new since it was a slightly lower angle.
