New pre-print with some updates on ivory:miR193 in a highly polymorphic moth. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6... We mapped ivory (again!?) this time controlling aspects of camouflage in Anticarsia gemmatalis. Mapping, SVs, Expression and Function. Comments/suggestions welcome!

Very excited to share the first chapter of my PhD thesis out in @elife.bsky.social : doi.org/10.7554/eLif... We discovered how the gene "mirror" is necessary for specifying the “vannus”, a unique domain in the posterior part of butterfly wings. 🦋🦋 (1/6) #CRISPR #butterfly #genomics

Lepidopteran scale cells derive from sensory organ precursors through a canonical lineage
Summary: The wing scales of butterflies and moths are derived from sensory organ precursors and are homologues of mechanosensory bristles.

New preprint by butterfly wizard @lucalivraghi.bsky.social www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... We mapped optix (again?!) as the switch gene of a natural polymorphism, this time controlling silver patches of a mountain butterfly. Gorgeous RNAi validation, evidence of selective sweeps, introgression

🌟 Introducing the Mazo-Vargas Lab @DukeU. 🌟 🧬 We employ #genetics, #functional-genomics, and #evodevo approaches to untangle the genetic basis of morphological adaptive traits.
Five members of the Mazo-Vargas laboratory are standing at the Duke University campus, with tiered grassy steps and autumn trees, under a sky with scattered clouds.
