REMINDER: Mitch McConnell hasn’t been seen or heard from in now 73 days. Yet he still: •Has his job •Gets paid, and •Gets free world-class healthcare The man who voted against a living wage, against universal healthcare, & against guaranteed paid leave—gets all three as he needs it most.😐

In 1985 in a Vancouver airport, a man Karen-ed the employee at a check-in counter until she agreed to defy policy & check his baggage through despite him not being confirmed. He didn't board, the bag was a bomb, it killed 329 people. But "the customer is always right" survived.

Call centers can no longer call field offices via admin lines. It seems very much like a deliberate rupturing of communication between the moving parts of the agency.

This week, with no notice or explanation, attorneys can no longer call Social Security Administration field offices. They are being shunted to the call centers, who can't talk to them if it's been more than 60 days since a case has been decided. cc: @kathleenromig.bsky.social

They should prob also ask about disruptions to teleservice. Attorneys can no longer call field offices; they're getting shunted to the call centers, who can't help them. The call centers can no longer call the field offices via the admin lines. All changes made with no warning & no explanation.

Address & direct deposit changes called into the teleservice centers, for example, don't process for 60 days. If beneficiaries want their benefits to continue seamlessly, they have to have crystal balls in order to know the future two months in advance.

The Social Security Administration has announced that their employees agency-wide will no longer have advance leave of any kind, sick or annual. They already took away working credit, which enabled employees to earn extra leave. @kathleenromig.bsky.social

Clarence Thomas says the 14th Amendment should be read narrowly because it was written for formerly enslaved people. By that logic, the 2nd Amendment was written for muskets, not AR-15s. Funny how that kind of originalism only shows up when it's convenient.

Except in some cases, where the field office can call the person &, you guessed it, *handle the matter over the phone*. From one phone call pre-Trump to circumnavigating the globe. Such efficiency!

Per my spouse, an SSA teleservice rep in Alabama, wait times are currently upwards of two hours. Then he has to tell many callers that their matter must be handled in a field office...& the soonest appointment is in two months.

I thought it was odd last year that SSA’s watchdog didn’t directly get at total phone wait times at SSA. Turns out a draft had that info, but it was taken out, per @merylkornfield.bsky.social, who writes that the OIG is trying to maintain a good relationship with the head of SSA.

This week, the #SocialSecurityAdministration has said employees can't telework bc the public benefits from hands-on, in-person contact AND there's no reason work from one field office can't be shopped out to offices across the country. SSA truly is ASS-backwards. cc: @kathleenromig.bsky.social

@kathleenromig.bsky.social My SSA TSC spouse just got this message from AFGE. Seeing as he commutes an hour each way & gas getting more expensive by the hour, it'd be great if this holds up.

Midway through Fahrenheit 451, we learn that the U. S. government has launched a series of unprovoked wars against smaller countries, just because it can, while the population is so hypnotized by amusements & devices that hardly anyone knows the wars are taking place.
“Every hour so many damn things in the sky! How in hell did those bombers get up there every single second of our lives! Why doesn’t someone want to talk about it! We’ve started and won two atomic wars since 2022! Is it because we’re having so much fun at home we’ve forgotten the rest of the world? Is it because we’re so rich and the rest of the world’s so poor and we just don’t care if they are? I’ve heard the rumors; the world is starving, but we’re well fed. Is it true, the world works hard and we play? Is that why we’re hated so much? ... Maybe the books can get us half out of the cave. They just might stop us from making the same damn insane mistakes!”

At the same time, they are curtailing what the teleservice representatives are allowed to do for people who call. The Birmingham AL TSC was told just today that, when doing call-backs, they can't proceed with any call screened by Google Assist. Meaning that customer now has to call back & be on hold

In functioning democracies, ministers resign all the time, under threat of a no confidence vote in the parliament. We have a system where legislative confirmation totally fails ex ante to screen out wildly unqualified people, & ex post accountability depends on a toothless extraordinary measure.
