Corporations buying the naming rights to hockey arenas is commonplace these days, but back in 1972 the WHA sold the naming rights to its championship trophy. The AVCO Corporation paid a large sum to advertise its company to the hockey world. The league folded in 1979 and the trophy was retired.

The Avco World Trophy of the former World Hockey Association as it appeared at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, ON in March 2018.

"That's a lot of stripes!" That's what some people are saying about PWHL Detroit's uniform. Have a look at the Montreal Canadiens' "barber pole" throwback of their original uniform. Detroit's uni is minimalist in comparison.

With the new playoff format, eight PWHL teams will qualify for the playoffs this season, four from each conference. For the Western Conference, that means that at least three teams will be in the playoffs for the first time. It could be four if the Frost somehow fail to qualify. Who makes it in?

Some people are worried about the PWHL going head-to-head with the NHL on Saturday nights. They're concerned that the PWHL will get crushed in the TV ratings and that it will make the league look bad. I don't think that's the case. Many PWHL fans are not fans of the NHL. It'll be fine on #HNIC.

The irony is not lost on me that Hamilton will be one of the teams playing the very first PWHL game on Hockey Night in Canada. I say this because the NHL took the Hamilton Tigers away from that city in a very shady business move in 1925, and now the NHL was taken from CBC's HNIC. It's meant to be.

The World Hockey Association (WHA) attempted a reboot in 2005, with the newly-formed league scheduled to play that same year. The original league existed from 1972-1979. The league never hit the ice. Here are some of the teams that were scheduled to play. Detroit's logo is the only one I like.

Some have disagreed with Hamilton getting a PWHL team, since Toronto has a team and the cities are very close to each other. Imagine having two teams in the same city in a league with only four teams. That's exactly how the NHL started in 1917, until the MTL Wanderers' arena burned to the ground.

I see some people are complaining that the Cleveland #WNBA team has chosen to call itself the Sirens, when there is a team in the #PWHL called the New York Sirens. Different leagues, different sports. It could be worse. The #CFL🇨🇦🏈 at one time had two teams called Roughriders, and Rough Riders.

There is a precedent that was set by the NHL regarding names that do not belong on the Stanley Cup. In 1983, Basil Pocklington's name was X-ed out. He was the father of then Edmonton Oilers owner, Peter Pocklington. They also did a disservice of misspelling his name as "Bazil." #TomDundon

I'm really hopeful that the PWHL signs a deal with ION TV next season because I would be able to watch the games on that channel with a $30 TV antenna. I can't watch the free games on YouTube since those are geo-blocked in Canada, but with cheap rabbit ears, I can pick up the ION TV signal.
