On 15 June 2026 I had the immense pleasure to be present at the doctoral defence of Marlies Vermeulen, at the University of Maastricht. Marlies is the first candidate to finish her doctoral studies in artistic research at MERIAN, the Maastricht Experimental Research In and through the Arts Network, a collaboration between Maastricht University, jan van eyck academie, and Zuyd University of Applied Sciences.

It is already three weeks ago that I was in Hamburg for this year's International Computer Music Conference, which took place from 10-16 May 2026. Georg Hajdu, composer and director of the Ligeti Center, had invited me to give a keynote lecture at the renowned conference; I felt extremely honoured to share some of my work alongside absolute monsters in the field, such as Robert Henke (who co-created Ableton Live, which has been my favourite music software through years!), James Anderson Moorer, and Psyche Loui.

Some time ago, I published a first post on our project "Towards Circular Communities", a collaboration between our Fontys Academy of the Arts professorship Artistic Connective Practices and Next Nature, funded through the programme "Artistiek en Ontwerpend Onderzoek" (artistic and design-based research) from Nationaal Regieorgaan Praktijkgericht Onderzoek SIA and Stimuleringsfonds Creatieve Industrie. The central idea of the project is to imagine and speculate how we, as a society, can create a circular community — through artistic research.

This week, the new issue of Forum+ has been published, openly accessible as always. The issue is filled with beautiful contributions from various corners of artistic research, ranging from dynamic, embodied and non-hierarchical "smooth spaces" in co-creative and transdisciplinary methodologies and tactile intimacy with a dead body to high-speed co-creative performance processes and a dialogue between two heavily pregnant doctoral artist-researchers…

During the last half year, a small group connected to our professorship has carried out a preparatory research period for a new project, Putting Feet on the Grounds of Racism: A site-specific artistic research project on the relationship between the Dutch colonial past and present-day racism, employing movement practices (walking or running) as participatory and situated artistic-activist interventions. Polarisation, racism and tendencies for fascism are growing - in the Netherlands, our surrounding countries and on a global scale.

Since 2022 the national research network Creating Cultures of Care has done intensive work on the relationship between art and care(fulness), chaired by Utrecht University of the Arts and involving several professorships, universities, and practice partners throughout the Netherlands. Op een volle Dam wordt vanmiddag gedemonstreerd tegen racisme en fascisme. Stadsomroep AT5 spreekt van duizenden mensen die op de jaarlijkse betoging zijn afgekomen.ppDe demonstranten verzamelen zich vanaf het begin van de middag. Om 14.00 uur begon de demonstratie, in de loop van de middag lopen de aanwezigen door de stad naar het Museumplein.ppZowel op de Dam als het Museumplein zijn er sprekers van verschillende organisaties, zoals Kick Out Zwarte Piet, Vrouwen tegen Uitzetting, het Nederlands Palestina Komitee, Een Ander Joods Geluid en de FNV.ppOp webcambeelden is te zien dat de Dam bijna helemaal vol staat:ppDe organisatie rekende van tevoren op zon 15.000 mensen maar het is nog niet duidelijk of er daadwerkelijk zoveel betogers op de been zijn.ppDeze editie is wel een stuk drukker dan vorig jaar, constateert AT5. De wereld staat in brand en daarom sta ik nu hier.ppMoslims, vluchtelingen en andere Nederlanders met een migratieachtergrond worden gebruikt als zondebok in een strategie die erop gericht is om verdeeldheid en haat te zaaien, is te lezen op de site van het comit.ppDe demonstratie vindt elk jaar over de hele wereld plaats in het kader van de Internationale Dag tegen Racisme amp Discriminatie op 21 maart. In Nederland organiseert het 21 Maart Comit de demonstratie.ph2Ook demonstratie tegen Erdoganh2pEr is ook een protest tegen de Turkse president Erdogan op het Beursplein. Daar wordt steun betoogd aan de burgemeester van Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglu.
