Just finished up my first big, official IRL riichi tournament, I ended up at 70th place out of 156 entrants at CART. I was 24th after day 1, but things fell apart in day 2. I was still in the running for some pro points in the final match of the day, but it went very poorly.

You may not be able to get both chiitoi and ryanpeikou in riichi mahjong since your hand can only be interpreted one way at a time.... But if you play shouhai mighty, you might be able to catch a glimpse of Schrodinger's Chiitoi.

Some friends got together and taught me MCR Mahjong recently. Not sure if I'm a big fan, but withholding final judgement until I've played a few more games. Feels very 'autopilot', but part of that could be that I'm still very new to judging what hands I could aim for.

My not-so-secret mahjong pet peeve is when someone brings gigantic 40mm+ tiles and wants to use them to play riichi on a junk mat. Moving things around constantly because they can't place their discarded tiles, bending walls and putting called tiles in weird places because there's no room, etc.

At our local mahjong place, they mostly play HK style, and whenever someone wins, I hear them say "Mahjong!" and everyone else at the table starts clapping. I think that's behavior we need to normalize... Whenever I say the word "mahjong", people nearby should cheer and clap and get really happy.

Entered a riichi team tournament with a bunch of friends a little while ago, and our team ended up getting 3rd place out of 48! I ended with a score of -2000 over 8 hanchans. So not awful? But it WAS a Saki-themed tournament, so it would have been better if I could have ended at a perfect zero.

I asked Google Gemini if it could find the answer to the mahjong wwyd discard problem on the cover of the 何切らない problem book online somewhere. It told me that it couldn't find the picture so it didn't know the question, but based on common wwyd discard discussion, the answer is most likely 2m.
