Polling shows the PQ could win a majority with just 30%, the lowest vote share for a majority in Canadian history. First-past-the-post is broken. The PQ promises proportional representation in term one, but absolute power creates excuses. Holding them accountable starts now.
Text excerpt reading: "Just under a week out from the Oct. 5 election, Quebec's political landscape remains so divided that the PQ could nab a majority of the province's 127 seats with scarcely 30 per cent of the vote. It would be an unprecedented ending to an unusual campaign, in which none of the PQ's four opponents have been able to mount a compelling case against the sovereigntist party."

The front of the table features a white banner reading "Fair Vote Canada / Représentation équitable au Canada" alongside the slogan "Make Every Vote Count!" and website URL. On the table are informational pamphlets and two display posters showing pie charts comparing election results: one titled "Ontario votes 2025" and another titled "Federal Election 2025" covering Toronto and Saskatchewan. In the background, trees, sunny park grounds, and other event tents are visible.

Elections must not be decided by a few swing ridings. First-past-the-post has plunged the US into chaos through hyper-polarized two-party politics, disproportionate majorities, and regional one-party domination. Proportional representation is how Canada avoids that fate.

Great to see the CBC cover our position on the BC snap election. First-past-the-post is directly to blame for early election calls when politicians gamble for total power with minority support. We need proportional representation for true democratic stability.

The BC opposition is fracturing again, risking another BCNDP majority without a majority vote. First-past-the-post incentivizes non-compete deals and mergers over real choice. Proportional representation would let parties compete openly without stepping on each other’s toes.

Proportional representation is talked about a lot, but how would this actually work in Canada? See our breakdown here. Single Transferable Vote (STV) fills seats using ranked ballots. Mixed Member Proportional (MMP) pairs local candidates with regional top up seats so every vote counts.

The BC Liberals' choice to ignore '05's PR-STV vote, run a cynical '09 do-over, and oppose proportional representation in '18 set up today's splinter party. These parties can either keep cannibalizing and collapsing each other, or back proportional representation to compete on their own terms.

Under first-past-the-post, municipalities are little more than playthings at the mercy of whichever premier leads a majority government without a majority of the vote. Proportional representation creates a vital check on provincial overreach by requiring broad, multi-party consensus instead.

First-past-the-post creates the same cynical game everywhere. The urban ridings housing these bike lanes do not contribute to the UCP's majority, making them easy sacrifices to win key seats. Proportional representation would end this regional warfare by making every vote matter equally.

Ford is tearing up bike lanes in opposition ridings to pander to suburban swing voters. It’s dirty, cheap politics. Proportional representation destroys this game by moving power from swing ridings to swing voters, ensuring downtown votes count and ending regional warfare.
"We’re keeping our promise to fight gridlock and get people moving again.

Bike lanes are coming off Ontario’s busiest streets and going back onto side streets, where they belong."

First-past-the-post has locked Alberta into a rigid two-party map. With the NDP dominating cities and the UCP sweeping rural areas, the provincial election is decided by just a handful of suburban swing ridings. We need proportional representation so every vote matters.
An electoral map and results graphic for the 2023 Alberta general election under first-past-the-post. The main provincial map illustrates a stark urban-rural divide: vast rural regions are shaded blue for the United Conservative Party, while dense urban clusters in Edmonton and Calgary are orange for the Alberta New Democrats. Party results show the UCP won 49 seats with 52.56% of the vote, and the NDP won 38 seats with 44.02% of the vote. A legislature diagram shows a UCP majority. A small pie chart titled 'Vote vs. Seats Share' contrasts the current distribution with a hypothetical proportional representation system, where seats would closely mirror the provincial popular vote totals. With @robcerjanec.bsky.social and @navdeepbains.bsky.social entering the Ontario Liberal leadership race, we urge them to back proportional representation. We must fix a broken system where the party came second in popular vote but a distant third in seats, while Ford won a majority on 43%.
An infographic titled "Ontario votes 2025" compares two pie charts to demonstrate the difference between the popular vote and the final seat distribution.

The first pie chart, titled "How we voted (popular vote)", shows the PC party at 43%, the Liberal party at 29.9%, the NDP at 18.6%, the Green party at 4.8%, and Other at 3.8%.

The second pie chart, titled "What we got (seats)", shows how those votes translated into legislative power: the PC party share increases significantly to 64.5% of the seats, the NDP gets 21.8%, the Liberal party drops significantly to 11.3%, the Green party drops to 1.6%, and Other drops to 0.8%.

The 58 MPPs who voted yes represent just 40% of voters, while the 41 who voted no represent the other 60%. Proportional representation would end this distortion of democracy and ensure provinces can no longer ride roughshod over municipalities without a broad majority consensus.

In a proportional system, Carney and Guilbeault could be in different parties, negotiating openly. Instead, first-past-the-post forced an artificial marriage where groups clashed behind closed doors until one side got crushed and forced out of government entirely.

MP Marilyn Gladu implies funding was tied to joining the Liberals. Though 29k locals voted Liberal, their voices were ignored because they did not win unless their MP crossed the floor. Proportional representation fixes this so governments cannot ignore your needs.
A screenshot of a National Post news article headline and excerpt from May 22, 2026, titled "Floor-crosser Marilyn Gladu reveals her conversation with Carney and the 'toxic environment' among Conservatives." The subhead reads, "'I'm moving forward and bringing that conservative voice into the (Liberal) tent,' said Gladu" by Stephanie Taylor. The article text describes Gladu approaching a minister on a "begging mission" to restore cut funding in her riding, where she was asked, "Sure, when are you coming over," leading to a discussion about crossing the floor.

Ford accidentally exposed how first-past-the-post rewards catering to a narrow base. Parties only need to win a few swing ridings to get a majority, even if most voters chose someone else. Proportional representation means governments must earn broad majority support.

Our current system means labour rights can be dismantled by politicians without majority support when they become inconvenient. Proportional representation would ensure that no changes are made to labour rights without a broad majority consensus.

60% of Ontario voters did not vote for Ford's party. Yet, thanks to first-past-the-post, he has full power to hide records and evade accountability. Proportional representation would mean no changes to freedom of information without a genuine majority consensus.

Despite 58% of Canadian voters saying they would vote for another party, our electoral system means the Liberals could win a massive majority. Proportional representation ensures seats closely match the popular vote, meaning a party's seat share reflects its vote share.
An image by Polling Canada from May 15, 2026, details a Nanos federal poll showing the Liberals leading by about 104 seats.

A table projects popular vote and seats. The Green Party has 4% support and 2 seats (range 1 to 3). The NDP has 12% support and 14 seats (range 7 to 20). The Bloc Québécois has 6% support and 19 seats (range 14 to 24). The Liberal Party has 42% support and 206 seats (range 182 to 237). The Conservative Party has 33% support and 102 seats (range 79 to 126).

The post lists federal polling percentages and changes from the 2025 election: Liberal Party at 42% (-2), Conservative Party at 33% (-8), NDP at 12% (+6), Bloc Québécois at 6% (no change), Green Party at 4% (+3), and People's Party at 2% (+1).

The poll used telephone and online methods with 1,000 respondents and a 3.1% margin of error, directing users to 338Canada for more details.

Despite polls showing that 61% of voters would choose another party, Ford would still win a majority and the unilateral power to reshape the province. Proportional representation would mean an end to majority governments that lack majority support.

Should a government without a majority of the vote be able to doom entire species to extinction? Proportional representation ensures environmental protections are built on broad majority consensus, not something to be ripped up when they become inconvenient.

The latest issue of Yellowknifer highlights the push for proportional representation at the spring trade show. Moving away from first-past-the-post means every vote actually counts toward the final result. Our democracy works best when the legislature reflects how people actually voted.
A composite image of the front page of the Yellowknifer newspaper dated May 13, 2026. The main headline discusses a financial lifeline for the Ekati mine. Several photos are featured, including a portrait of a smiling woman in a forest, two women sitting together on a couch, and a street view of Franklin Avenue. At the bottom, a photo shows two men, Jeremy Flatt and Eli Purchase, standing at a Fair Vote NWT booth during a trade show. They are holding a sign that says Ask Me About Proportional Representation and a humorous poster that says Vote for Conan. A QR code in the top left corner encourages readers to find local news online.
