Some of Victoria City Council candidates are running for CRD Board, which is who decides if cruise ship solid waste goes to Hartland Landfill. Ask your CRD candidates how they’ll vote on taking American cruise ship garbage. What you can do: www.fair-sailing.com/garbage

There are 12 cruise ship calls left in Victoria’s 2026 season. Almost half of them are large NCL ships who filed estimates of hazardous & non-haz liquid & solid wastes generated, with plans to drop it off on our island. Tonight HAL Eurodam & NCL Bliss arrive. Cue the garbage trucks and tankers.

Victoria September cruise recap: 56 ships. 434 hours of emissions (no shore power), 84% regulatory calls required by 1886 USA law, 84% roundtrip Seattle (let’s return cruise garbage to SEA instead of offloading it here.) Cruise tourists account for less than 2% of tourist spending in our region.

How Scrubbers Work
How Scrubbers Work

• Air vs. Water Pollution: Systems swap air emissions for ocean contamination, allowing ships to burn cheap, high-sulfur fuel while complying with International Maritime Organization (IMO) standards.

• Open-Loop Systems: Pull in large volumes of seawater, spray it through exhaust stacks, and dump the resulting toxic mix overboard.

• Closed-Loop Systems: Recycle washwater onboard and store the remaining sludge for disposal on land.

Environmental Impacts

• Toxic Cocktail: Discharge contains sulfuric acid, heavy metals, soot, oil, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

• Marine Life Damage: Even extreme dilutions harm zooplankton, stunt crustacean development, and cause severe larval deformations in sea urchins and mussels.

• Volume: Individual ships can discharge up to 1,200 cubic meters of washwater per hour, totaling billions of tonnes globally each year.
