I had one of these male supremacist "Democrats" stalk and harass my wife (an elected official) for years. It's a weird subtype.

Yes. Racism and weird trade beliefs are the through lines. Everything else seems to have been negotiable (cf. reproductive rights)

What is genuinely fascinating to me is he captured a political party full of economically literate people and got them to agree to pretend this isn't idiocy.

Dolly Parton's passing is effortlessly proving that if you spend your life being nice and kind and generous instead of mean and cruel and selfish, then apologists for mean cruel selfish bullies won't have to go around scolding people for cheering when you die, because there will be no cheering.

Someone told me "Bluesky is just like Twitter." I argued that was untrue on the basis that last time I had a Twitter account most times I got a new follower their bio said "single & looking for fun" & here when I get a new follower it tends to say something like "professor of rare moths".

I mean, Occam's Razor. He said he reviewed additional evidence and it changed his view. He has access to facts and context we don't. He has training and expertise we don't. Yet you confidently diagnose him as a coward who volunteered a new opinion because of it. That's the conspiracy mind.
000
David Caldwell @factsmustwin.bsky.social · 10/08/2026
That's just false. He said he'd seen additional evidence and it changed his view. That's what happens in science. No fascism required.

People's opinions don't matter, except yours and your friends. Certainly not the opinion of (checks notes) the person in charge of the entire government response under President Biden.

I'm not the enemy. If folks issuing hostile broadsides to people *listening to scientists* are not careful, you will be.

David Caldwell @factsmustwin.bsky.social · 05/08/2026
No wonder conspiracies proliferate; people with or claiming scientific credentials assume bad faith and are so scarred by cranks that they muzzle the uncertainty in their own ranks to try to fight disinformation, rather than fighting it the way WHO is, with plain language and publications.

More thoroughly, we all face an industry of people spreading lies. But we can't fight those lies by shading the truth ourselves. WHO set that example, by noting that there are multiple hypotheses and uncertainty remains.
100
David Caldwell @factsmustwin.bsky.social · 05/08/2026
The complete tone-deafness of eviscerating someone reading the plain language of a report *written by scientists* under a WHO program designed to *fight disinformation* is breathtaking. I am not "anti-science" or "anti-vax." You think I am because I paid attention to what scientists said.
100
David Caldwell @factsmustwin.bsky.social · 05/08/2026
WHO calls "an accidental laboratory related event" "one of the "two main hypotheses": concluding that "It can therefore not be ruled out, nor can it be proven until more information is provided." That's not uncertainty, you say. Mmm-kay. It's certainly the opposite of certainty.
100
David Caldwell @factsmustwin.bsky.social · 05/08/2026
These aren't technical terms. Words have meaning. "Inconclusive" means the data are insufficient to prove or disprove the hypothesis, making the truth of the hypothesis ... UNCERTAIN.
100
David Caldwell @factsmustwin.bsky.social · 05/08/2026
Not to put too fine a point on it, but they could've been just as condescending and dismissive toward this idea as you have been toward me. They didn't do that. Why?
100
David Caldwell @factsmustwin.bsky.social · 05/08/2026
And, to be precise, the quote you cited credits "speculation from scientific reports" for this idea. Is it your view that this is supposed to be read as "baseless speculation?" "wild speculation?" The authors could have written that. They didn't. They rather left the question open, explicitly.
100
David Caldwell @factsmustwin.bsky.social · 05/08/2026
This dodges the issue, though. 27 multidisciplinary experts wouldn't then write a report for worldwide public distribution saying that whether I was a rapist was "inconclusive." Why did the authors do this, in your view? That may be the crux of this. What do you think my ignorant self is missing?

David Caldwell @factsmustwin.bsky.social · 05/08/2026
Now you're going to purport that I'm not even smart enough to know what "learning" is? Geez, dude. Lot smarter than the rest of us, eh?
000
David Caldwell @factsmustwin.bsky.social · 05/08/2026
But it's not like I'm cherry picking journal articles I don't understand. I get that enemies of science do that. I'm reading stuff that was written for laypeople!
100
David Caldwell @factsmustwin.bsky.social · 05/08/2026
And I think that clarifies the difference here. You say I don't understand the WHO report, but I do, because it was purposely written so that the public could understand it! The audience isn't virologists, it's everyone. If you don't like what they wrote, take it up with them.
100
David Caldwell @factsmustwin.bsky.social · 05/08/2026
And so yes, you call it "scoring Internet points." I'm not sure what, exactly. But I am learning and trying to engage in matters of public import. Wouldn't the world be better if more people read about science. And then you call me a monkey for doing that. Not good.
200
David Caldwell @factsmustwin.bsky.social · 05/08/2026
And yes, I'm sorry about the vitriol others have directed at others. But making an honest assessment of the uncertainty by listening to what experts in the field *tell the public* does not make me a party to those threats.
110
David Caldwell @factsmustwin.bsky.social · 05/08/2026
I have also gotten death threats for completely unrelated (well, I guess also political) reasons. I am emphatically not making light of that. But I'm listening to experts. Shouldn't I? Your position seems to be just you.

And yet managing not to call anyone a subhuman primate! I understand English. I read a report written in English. Plain English! Oh well, I'll leave you to your hostility.
100
David Caldwell @factsmustwin.bsky.social · 05/08/2026

David Caldwell @factsmustwin.bsky.social · 05/08/2026
Well, there's your characterization, and then there's the characterization of the 27 multidisciplinary experts chosen by the WHO to write a report on this very topic. How to weigh those is the question.
