Patroclus had tried to warn him. "What’s wrong with them? He asks me what’s wrong. Gods help me! They are derbies, darling! Open-laced, clunky, pedestrian derbies! This is a war party, not a tax audit. The invitation practically screamed for a sleek, unbroken silhouette of Chelseas!!”

Who can forget the passage on which Agamemnon gifts Achilles a pair of ridiculously oversized derbies, which Achilles, not wanting to admit to having smallish feet, feels compelled to wear in battle for the rest of the campaign?

Achilles was hidden to avoid his prophesied fate and only joined the Trojan expedition after he was discovered by Greek leaders because it had been foretold that the war could only be won with Achilles. But the complexity of tragic arcs do not lend themselves well to cartoonish didacticism.

Good thing that this couldn’t have been predicted almost a year ago <runs bitter victory lap> and the government didn’t just blithely carry on doing the same thing. www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/politics/718...

He does have a point. Evildoers often do get stuff done, and they have an edge: doing good requires intelligence and compassion to weigh the impact on others of one’s actions, including second order consequences. Being free of those concerns significantly simplifies decisions and actions.

He seems to want to shift the political debate towards fighting incompetence. I’m not sure he chose the terrain wisely.

Iran defeated and exposed us. They made apparent that the American Empire is weak and vulnerable and the fake ceasefire is a disguised surrender. Welcome to the Age of American Humiliation. It’s going to get worse if we don’t learn our lessons. jaredyatessexton.substack.com/p/the-age-of...

The job of "influencer" has always struck me as the very deepest circle of hell. It's basically a *recipe* for burnout & mental illness. It's just so dystopian that young people see it as one of the few viable remaining careers.
