Mike @expatpgh.bsky.social · 25/08/2026I’ve watched a few TV show reboots, and they tend to be either a hefty payday for the stars and creators, pure fan service, or a reinvention nobody asked for. King of the Hill is the exception. It stays true to its roots while letting the characters evolve in meaningful ways. It’s actually moving. 000
Mike @expatpgh.bsky.social · 30/07/2026@wychstreet.bsky.social Heard an interview with Patrick Ball who is an Emmy nominated actor on The Pitt. He is a Yale school of drama guy. While shooting the show's second season he also appeared on stage in a production of Hamlet. Said the experience made it screen acting exponentially better. 030
Mike @expatpgh.bsky.social · 30/07/2026@robdelaney.bsky.social Dude you’re in this cool new show called Furious on Hulu that people should watch. If they don’t they are bad poopy heads. 000

Mike @expatpgh.bsky.social · 20/02/2026@craigcalcaterra.bsky.social I've been halfway between Cleveland and Columbus. This is not shocking at all. 020
Mike @expatpgh.bsky.social · 14/02/2026@dicknixon.bsky.social Sir, my god. I know a lot of this kind of thing is brilliant staff work, but the pure political instincts of this kid are seldom seen. 020
Mike @expatpgh.bsky.social · 10/02/2026@wychstreet.bsky.social Have you seen the Bonfiglio and Apatow produced Mel Brooks two part documentary on HBO? 110
Mike @expatpgh.bsky.social · 13/01/2026@wychstreet.bsky.social Saw your Harrison Ford repost at the other place. Heard Mark Hamill discuss the SW trash compactor scene. Hamill turned to Ford - post compactor - asked, wouldn't my hair be messed-up? Ford said, "kid it ain't that kinda' film. If people are focused on your hair we're fucked" 020
Mike @expatpgh.bsky.social · 30/12/2025@wychstreet.bsky.social Occurred to me that Cameron Crowe has had one of the more fabulous careers of a generation. As a teen he wrote for peak Rolling Stone. Wrote and directed great films. Married a rock star. Mentored by the likes of Lester Bangs, Billy Wilder, James Brooks and Warren Beatty. 020
Mike @expatpgh.bsky.social · 17/12/2025@wychstreet.bsky.social My God. As if we needed any reminder of his gift. Stephen King’s remembrance of Rob Reiner in today’s Times just crushed me. A great writer sharing personal anecdotes. It lands hard. 020
Mike @expatpgh.bsky.social · 15/12/2025@wychstreet.bsky.social Will RN address the vial Trump Truth Social post about the Reiners? I know RN tries to avoid the trivial, but this seems to have political ramifications. 010
Mike @expatpgh.bsky.social · 05/11/2025@craigcalcaterra.bsky.social November 10th is the 50th anniversary of the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Might the newsletter commemorate it in an interesting way? Perhaps a mention of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee? 010
Mike @expatpgh.bsky.social · 21/10/2025@wychstreet.bsky.social Rebecca Miller's 'Mr. Scorsese' on Apple TV is much watch for cinephiles. There's a Day-Lewis comment that I can't stop thinking about. "Marty is a sensualist who works like a coal miner." Also, Roger Ebert's name pops up almost every episode. Scorsese really respected him. 000
Mike @expatpgh.bsky.social · 15/10/2025@dicknixon.bsky.social Sir, this is one of the best campaigns of modern memory 020
Mike @expatpgh.bsky.social · 29/09/2025@wychstreet.bsky.social I thought of you recently. The actor Tom Pelphrey is promoting his HBO show. He was discussing the tendency for TV directors to encourage improvisation. He said he was raised in theatre. He said "shit, you don't change a comma much less go off on a riff." 000
Mike @expatpgh.bsky.social · 03/09/2025@dicknixon.bsky.social Sir, what is your reaction to Trump attempting to clear the field in the New York mayoral race to widen the path for Cuomo? 020
Mike @expatpgh.bsky.social · 19/08/2025@wychstreet.bsky.social It’s a small detail, but Peggy’s pronunciation of SaudI EYErabia just kills me. 000
Mike @expatpgh.bsky.social · 12/08/2025@nytpitchbot.bsky.social Yeah. He's doing this because of his well-honed real estate instincts. 010
Mike @expatpgh.bsky.social · 24/07/2025@wychstreet.bsky.social Chuck Mangione died today. The flags at Meglo Mart will remain at half mast for a respectable period. 062
Mike @expatpgh.bsky.social · 12/06/2025@dicknixon.bsky.social Sir, did Senator Padilla plan to get arrested with TV cameras filming or was it a happy accident? 010
Mike @expatpgh.bsky.social · 03/06/2025@wychstreet.bsky.social Catalyst: Hank catches Bobby wearing headphones and dancing outside. Hank: We can't have people seeing you dancing in the alley. They'll think we haven't taught you shame. And, I'll tell you what we certainly have. 010
Mike @expatpgh.bsky.social · 31/05/2025@wychstreet.bsky.social Scott Frank was on Maron’s pod. He dishes particularly about the process/degrees of script doctoring and rewriting. Fascinating. Also, of the modern screenwriting masters there doesn’t seem to be one who doesn’t count William Goldman as a mentor. He was a generous soul. 000
Mike @expatpgh.bsky.social · 13/05/2025@craigcalcaterra.bsky.social They are trying to equate both cases which is crap. Manfred is a plague. 020
Mike @expatpgh.bsky.social · 06/05/2025@cchinoregon.bsky.social @wychstreet.bsky.social The Conan receiving the Mark Twain Award show on Netflix is really superb. Beautifully produced. A honorific to the art of comedy. Brilliantly funny guests. There may not be a more beloved figure in comedy and entertainment than Conan. 010
Mike @expatpgh.bsky.social · 02/05/2025@wychstreet.bsky.social Heard a veteran TV writer talking about living in Brooklyn 15 years ago. There was a place in his neighborhood that he dubbed the character actor bar. He said the pinnacle was seeing Steve Buscemi, Corey Stoller and Noah Emmerich at a corner table drinking pints of Guinness. 020

Mike @expatpgh.bsky.social · 13/03/2025@dicknixon.bsky.social Sir, the pain in order to gain narrative isn’t a coherent political message. What’s going to happen when grandmas start missing their Social Security checks and there’s no one to answer the help line? 010
Mike @expatpgh.bsky.social · 28/02/2025@wychstreet.bsky.social The great Richard Price: “I write for film and television so I can afford to write novels.” 110
Mike @expatpgh.bsky.social · 08/02/2025@wychstreet.bsky.social I am compelled to seek your counsel. Saw a screening of the first Indiana Jones film. Ford is a movie star. Spielberg is at the peak of his confidence. I know Lucas and Kaufman created it but, goddamnit the Kasdan script is perfect. In rewatching it’s so efficient. 020
Mike @expatpgh.bsky.social · 26/01/2025@wychstreet.bsky.social Caught Saturday Night. It was fine. A bit too busy with characters and forced dialogue. Enjoyed some of the performances. More than anything it’s a love letter to Lorne. He begged, borrowed and stole to get the slow on the air. Has there been a better producer in modern TV? 030
Mike @expatpgh.bsky.social · 23/01/2025@wychstreet.bsky.social Watched an episode of King Of The Hill. Bobby is having problems with his dating life. Hank sends him to Boomhauer for advice. Peggy: Boomhauer!! His longest relationship is a 3-day weekend. Hank: I try to shield you from such things, but he does have a way with the ladies. 030
Mike @expatpgh.bsky.social · 17/01/2025@wychstreet.bsky.social Can someone please conduct a health and safety check on Mel Brooks? I am not sure how much more we can bare. 130

Mike @expatpgh.bsky.social · 09/01/2025@dicknixon.bsky.social Sir, I chuckled when reading Baker’s piece in the Times about the deep, abiding friendship between Presidents Ford and Carter. According to the article it began with their shared hatred of poor, dumb Ronnie Reagan. Too good and delicious to be true. 020
