There is a refusal by Americans to see identity outside of the 5 checkboxes that appear on the US census. I've seen American racists see British news referring to South Asian people as Asian, and then decide this is a conspiracy to cover up Islamic terrorism. Because to them Asian = Chinese only.

But that's not a sensible comparison - the Falklands did not have any native population before the current one. The current islanders are the only people to have ever lived there permanently. It's very different from the atrocities the British government did to Ireland.

The Falklands had no locals, they were periodically visited by fishermen sometimes but had no permanent population. Argentina meanwhile is a mostly European heritage country that ethnically cleansed native people from the south of their country.

Is this an artifact of the loose federalism in Canada? The US doesn't have this. Australia has different Liberal/National parties at state level depending on which was dominant and/or mergers, but they're still linked to the federal parties.
