Like treating the core constituency as the red headed step children while shoving cash onto institutions that oppress said constituency who have zero public gratitude about it, not really great for coalition cohesion!

Blame the democratic leadership that hates their base more than they hate republicans.

They want to dampen the size of the victory so the expectations of the base are kept in check.

Democrats have also shown us the last few times they came to power that the won't hold elite criminals from the preceding period of Republican rule accountable.

The painful irony is that he was able to beat Clinton in 08 and get to the top because he built on organizational base of people, only to thoroughly demobilize OFA and forget that lesson once he got into office.

Forgot student loan forgiveness! There are a lot of ways, most of which don’t show up on the government’s balance sheet, that a progressive government could reduce major financial burdens felt by those who pay for, and work for, daycares.

Wouldn’t crushing the cost of living (eg universal healthcare, mass urban housing construction, antitrust campaign on consumer staples…) put downward pressure on salaries without reducing the salary-earner’s quality of life?

NYT is right wing propaganda that is calibrated to target educated liberals.

War and economic policy are closely intertwined with human rights and dignity; framing them as being separate categories inherently dismisses the rights and dignity of those on the receiving end of the wars and economic policies.

The short, medium, and long term consequences of our existing strategy are pretty bad, and there are lots of ways we can alleviate the risks you fear if we make a material demonstration of our willingness to engage in good faith, mutually beneficial diplomacy.

Any version of a green new deal, ie trying our best to alleviate the civilizational threat hurtling down on us, would depend on friendly trade relations with China for rare earths, and encouraging them to dump solar panels and evs on the global market. Plenty of carrot to use instead of stick.

What happens if that happens now? We can’t stop them without nuclear war as is. That said, it’s unlikely the PRC wants to unify by force if they can get away with it peacefully, and if we acknowledge the actual power balance and become openly less threatening it’d dial down tensions.

That, and the PR requirement of identifying villains and punishing them during a time when likely everyone will be tightening their belts a bit.

It won't pay for it, but it will remove the primary powerbase of those who would otherwise fight sane policies tooth and nail. Expropriating the rich is more about removing their influence than gaining their assets.

A large cut in US military capability is probably a good thing, for the world and for the US constitutional order.

That was a big part of the rationale for Obama, and he decided to use his mandate to recapitalize the rich and rejuvinate the empire instead of addressing our fundamental problems.

One more interesting point: this spring I sat down with Sharyn Alfonsi of 60 Minutes for an extensive interview about my Epstein investigation. Subsequently, CBS pulled the segment and fired the reporter. The MAGA buyout of media has unquestionably aided the Trump administration’s cover up here.

“If this was true, I would be in jail” is not a real profession of innocence; it is a brag about how strenuously the state protects the male right of private sphere violence against women and children.

He’s never found an existing socialist government he wouldn’t criticize, except for the one that the CIA was backing to commit a genocide, and oh he was also close and longtime friends with the CIA’s favorite pedophilic sex trafficker.

This photo of Gretchen Whitmer is one of the single most powerful symbolic depictions of the contemporary Democratic Party leadership. Decking yourself out in blue as if you're different, while cooperating with Trump and pretending not to, says it all.

It's literally incredible that no one talks about the Democratic Party being so broke that they're asking for bills to be sent after the Midterms and no one wants to connect the dots and talk about why the base isn't donating and the correlation to the consultant class feeding like ticks.

10) If you're a guy I can almost all-but-guarantee you don't say "I love you" to the close family members in your life enough. I didn't! Started doing it without warning a few years ago and now all my family ends our calls that way and it just feels better in a way I never expected.

the centrist wing of the democratic party tied shallow identity politics - purely in symbolism not material concerns for marginalized groups - to the most toxic brand of milquetoast politics. then, their consultants tried to blame "activist groups" for ruining their image by "making demands"

Maybe, maybe not, but they’ve been flooding the zone before and since with rhetoric about how they’re not going to follow any gay rules of engagement and will rain death on the whole society, while also gutting the sorts of institutional checks that might have prevented it were it truly a mistake.
