Wind shear is visibly increasing on water vapor imagery (high clouds streaming in from the west) and starting to erode the western edge of the storm, though it may not be enough to appreciably weaken Isaias before landfall. Latest NHC discussion indicates a Cat 3 landfall is likely this evening.

Slow moving storms along a stationary front means yet another day of flash flooding across Illinois and Indiana. Here locally, 2-4 inches of rain have fallen in northeast Champaign County over the last 3 hours. That same area has dealt with flooding repeatedly over the last several days.

Interesting... Here in Champaign, Radarscope and others populated the earlier tornado warning instantly, but it didn't make it to WEAs or the automated siren system until about 5 minutes later... Two different data streams I guess? 🤔

Welp here we go again... Biggest threat in Champaign-Urbana is definitely going to be wind, but can't rule out some QLCS tornadoes either. Exactly when and where the worst weather occurs is going to depend on how the first batch of storms to our west evolves over the next few hours

Considering that one of the driving forces behind the formalization of the tornado emergency was to lower the perceived false alarm ratio, going from ~0.7 for all tor warnings to 0.3 for TORE (assuming EF-3+ as the criterion) is definitely a big achievement
020
Eddie Wolff @ewolffwx.bsky.social · 11/05/2026
Thanks! I will add, it's hard to say what would be considered valid since the official directive is purposely vague to allow forecasters to make their own decisions. Technically the only true rule is "severe threat to human life and catastrophic damage" which could be interpreted multiple ways 🤔

Eddie Wolff @ewolffwx.bsky.social · 11/05/2026
FWIW some colleagues and I actually have a paper in review looking at the first decade of formal IBW tornado emergencies (2014-2023). 70% were issued for EF-3+ tors. TOREs covered 23% of all EF-3+ tors and 55% of EF-4 tors. arxiv.org/pdf/2510.25011

And big thanks to @ncar-ucar.bsky.social and their 3D PAWS program. Without their instructions for 3D printed wind sensors, this would have cost about 10 times as much to build. As it stands, we'll be able to assemble 3 complete stations for less than the cost of a single RM Young wind sensor.
