Today’s Daily Record has a feature about my research on the closure of Cardowan colliery in Lanarkshire. It was pivotal in the build up to the 1984-85 miners’ strike and breaking union power. For more on Cardowan, read my new book, An Injury to All: The Unmaking of the British Working Class.

I’m not sure how this Herald reader imagines that we could plausibly ‘keep politics out of galleries’. It seems much more likely they object to the particular interpretations which sought to place exhibits in a historical context.

Visited the City of Empire exhibition. Was so angry about the fact the exhibition addressed empire that they wrote to the Herald to complain.

I was interviewed by BBC Scotland yesterday about Syngenta’s announcement that they intend to shut their chemicals plant in Grangemouth, threatening 400 jobs. The key points are the high human cost of more local manufacturing job losses and that government has a window to act decisively.

I contributed to a Reporting Scotland report on Syngenta’s plan to close their chemicals plant in Grangemouth. It would be another major blow to Scottish industry and local employment in an area already suffering manufacturing job losses. First report ⬇️

We've seen in the last few months how vulnerable Britain is due to its dependency on imported fuels. That applies to petrochemicals too. We are making ourselves insecure and losing jobs and skills instead of transitioning plants at Grangemouth to sustainable production.

Ewan Gibbs @ewangibbs.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Scotland's industrial base is in free fall, especially in petrochemicals. At Grangemouth alone there have now been major closures by INEOS, Calachem recently, and now Syngenta follows. That's not to mention Exxon closing its Mossmorran plant across the Forth in Fife.
