Civilization V My favorite podcast game. I’ve been playing Civ since the late 1990s, but V is the exact balance of accessibility and depth I want and love. Not only is Civ V a fantastic lazy game, it fits perfectly into my personal PC gaming renaissance of the late 2000s / early 2010s.

Trials of Mana ~25 years ago, a friend told me that there was a “Secret of Mana 2,” but you had apply a translation patch to a rom to play it. He showed me how. That was my gateway drug into emulation and unlocalized games, which is A LOT of what I played in the 2000s. I adore SD3 to this day.

Zelda: Oracle of Ages In my freshman year of HS, I bought Seasons while one of my friends (not the SF2 friend) bought Ages. We played the connected story in parallel, swapping games to transfer passwords. We talked about it in homeroom for a month. We still text about Game Boy Zelda sometimes.

Mega Man X When I bought a SNES in 1995 or ‘96, Mega Man X was the game I got with it. I didn’t know anything about X1 other than it was for Super Nintendo and his armor looked different. MMX is my favorite Mega Man, favorite platformer, maybe favorite action game. I replay it every few years.

Chrono Trigger My first RPG was FF IV, and shortly afterward I was playing every RPG I could find. Chrono Trigger eventually became my all-time favorite. Playing CT, FF4, FF6, et al. back then also had me seeking out online gaming forums for the first time, which became a formative experience.

Street Fighter II I think SF2 was the 2nd or 3rd time I ever played a fighting game, but it was the first one that made me really want to improve myself enough to get to the end credits. Also, SF2 is a game my best friend and I would play together often. I miss those simpler times.

Tetris Not the first videogame I ever played, but the first that was really mine. I received a Game Boy with Tetris as a gift from my grandfather when I was I think 6 years old, and at the time he didn’t realize he had created a monster.

The year is 75% over. Goal is to finish at least 8 of these 10 games before January 1st. I can do this. Time to lock in.

Yes, but I think Action is so broad that it could be almost any kind of game. I feel the term Character Action immediately evokes the kind of game you suggested.

Absolute Sollosi @evokerfordogs.bsky.social · 01/10/2026

I like calling action-oriented third-person non-shooter not-open-world non-platformer games Character Action. Otherwise it has too many qualifiers. I’m down with Search Action or 2D Search Action. It works.

GOT ‘IM #RollCredits on Mega Man 10 Above-average Mega Man bosses and stages, with an OUTSTANDING chiptune OST. Excellent bonus features as well. I found the difficulty puzzling? Robot Master stages are among the series’ toughest, but the Wily Stages are on the easier side. Weird. But good!

There is more access to manga than ever in the USA, so I collect 1 or 2 favorite series and use scans for everything else. And to try out new stuff. …just don’t ever expect me to call Sono Bisque Doll “My Dress-Up Darling.”

Nowadays I mostly stay current with a chapter tracking website and don’t have the stamina for a binge like that, but I’ve been there. Catching up to Ippo was just a particularly large stint.

GOT ‘IM #RollCredits on Mega Man 9. Excellent boss, stage, and weapon designs. Great music. Only minor quibbles like “I wish Mega Man had a charged shot” and “this game is really fucking hard sometimes.” First time clearing this one! Around 15 years ago I got to the endgame and gave up lol.

I enjoyed watching My-Th so much Friday night that I went and watched a few episodes of shows I never finished. -Gavv is really, really good. I don't know why I stopped watching. -Gotchard is OK, but focuses too much on the silly Pokémon creatures. - Zeztz is confusing early on, but stylish AF.

Rough night at trivia yesterday. We had a good first half and an abysmal second, I think finishing around 7th or 8th. A few of our blunders concerned actors in the Indiana Jones films, winners at the 2025 Country Music Awards, and the local geography of Pakistan.
