Making computers find bugs so that I don't have to -- mostly in databases, but prior to that in security. Former: GOOG, MSFT. Opinions are all me.

This feels like the start of a PoC or GTFO writeup :P

Mine has: "Product Preferences: Built a Magic" (And notes that I like Magic the Gathering separately.)

Wikipedia suggests that I am remembering correctly, and Kemper Freeman’s grandfather made a lot of money building out land ‘confiscated’ (stolen) from interned Japanese Americans.

Also IIRC maybe originally made their money by taking land from interned Japanese-Americans during WW2? But like, that’s a vague memory and maybe it was someone else?

Kemper set transit, particularly east-west transit, back by at least a decade in the Seattle area. From what I understand, basically owned the Bellevue city council and political process (and most of central Bellevue) for a lot of 1970-2000 (and beyond).

So, now that the Denny Way bus lane hasn't created gridlock across South Lake Union, are we going to get a mea culpa on any of this stuff or nah.

Amazing scene from The Odyssey recreated with AI.

The monster is speared in eye and looks incredible.

Scene shows a giant with two eyes

The thing that kills me about these celebratory posts from dem leaders is that we didn't win a victory here, we narrowly avoided a catastrophic defeat. If you can't tell the difference between winning and (barely) surviving, maybe you shouldn't be leading the fight!

I *think* you can cast speak with dead on NPCs that you killed in BG3, and they are generally pretty grumpy about it. But if my memory is right, it's not like a major plot point or similar?

Things were better when computer was in room. Now everywhere is computer. This is bad. Computer should never have escaped room.

(That being said the BP meds I got actually do wonders for the remaining anxiety I had, even though I’m pretty sure my BP is basically measuring the same most of the time — so I’m not complaining much.)

(Obviously totally acceptable numbers until I got diagnosed with ADHD and the numbers stayed the same but are now a concern.)

(Manual at the time was reliably like 128-132 over 85, so not great but not “imminent danger”)
150
Ev @evmaus.bsky.social · 17/06/2026
This has been the case since I was 20 — I spent a week in the hospital, and a pissed off doctor eventually wrote “Only manual BP” on the whiteboard after one too many “I think our migraine patient is having a heart attack” conversations.

Ev @evmaus.bsky.social · 17/06/2026
Even worse when even the expensive automatic cuffs at the hospital don’t work reliably for you… I have to basically tell every doctor or nurse I interact with that the automatic cuffs are going to read me as 165/150 and they need to do a manual read to get the real numbers.

TBH, it seems like “please include a short sentence per image so your blind citizens can engage fully with your content” is a reasonable ask for the social media team of a successful mayor of America’s largest city, esp. one who ran on policies regarding equity.

Ev @evmaus.bsky.social · 17/06/2026
There’s a few benefits, esp. when normalized: - Those who can‘t see (or can’t see well, or who are using a screen reader for some other reason) are able to engage with the content the way the rest of the world is - Helps with indexing/search for the images, if you ever want to find them later

I think it was also a clear risk management move. If you’re OpenAI in 2023, you have a lot less to lose by releasing something with all the problems chatbots had than Google in 2023. And once someone else has frontrun the risk it’s easier to release a competitor.

Seriously through 2016 the most Fox News pilled person I knew was my grandfather. I’m not sure even he would be down for domestic violence and nazi tattoos, which is apparently what we’re accepting? On our team?
000
Ev @evmaus.bsky.social · 07/06/2026
Like asserting things like “domestic violence is bad” that even like, my very conservative grandfather (who literally used feminine pronouns for me for like, several months as a ’joke’ to complain about my long hair) would have agreed with?

010
Ev @evmaus.bsky.social · 21/05/2026
Depends on the bow hunter, but I think you’re right in general. There are bow hunters who only take lethal shots and are very deliberate about it… and plenty who are fine w/a very traditional “hit it and follow til it keels over”

Like I’m all for fair play… if everyone is playing by the same rules. But don’t come to me after VA in the 2000s and scream about disenfranchised rural votes.
000
Ev @evmaus.bsky.social · 21/04/2026
Like, Charlottesville had to be offset by a huge portion of rural SWVa to make it part of a red district. Richmond area was aggressively split to dilute urban voters. Etc.
100
Ev @evmaus.bsky.social · 21/04/2026
I’m gonna just point out that the Republican majority in the 2000s gerrymandered VA to shit and diluted many urban democratic voters, so… If other states are gonna do it, VA dems shouldn’t be fucking shy about it.

I sort of agree, but the difference between validating a contract and validating behavior is unfortunately still something they seem to struggle with. Like many others, I am excited about the potential for scaling tools like formal methods.

I think the observation that taste & architecture remain important is crucial. My experience that it has gotten a lot easier to create code, but that without a lot of guidance agents are not yet good at software engineering (using the defn. of “software engineering is programming over time”).

Iirc, it was Yu Gi Oh — but I vaguely recall that it was because there was a card that required shaking hands with your opponent (and if you refused you’d lose) so being especially grody could win tournament games.

I mean... A big reason it was hard to open source several projects I worked on at Google was pretty much always "it relies on an library that doesn't have an easy drop in OSS replacement". :P The best solution was often "Ask the Abseil team if they'd consider supporting (behavior)".

(Sure, there’s ways to make sure you aren’t in this situation at runtime, so I wound up doing that to track down reuse in the AST… but now I have to add that test so nobody breaks this assumption that could be in the type system. Or I could rewrite the whole AST library and force immutability...)
000
Ev @evmaus.bsky.social · 29/01/2026
But thats… not exactly how objects in python work. And this makes adding AST modifications to existing code a little fraught.
100
Ev @evmaus.bsky.social · 29/01/2026
I have literally been wishing python had unique_ptr this week because it’s easy to have multiple references to an object and wind up with it getting reused somewhere…. Which is fine in theory, if it’s immutable.

Yeah, this is absolutely something I could have gotten into at that age, especially if my friends were all doing it. I even tried the stupid multiphase sleep optimization nonsense in college for a bit. TBH I feel like I dodged a lot of bad decisions by going to Seattle instead of the Bay Area…

I haven’t worked in computer security for years now, but last night I had a dream that the AI autocomplete now in my IDE downloaded a malware package and I had to reformat my work laptop. I woke up bemused and irrationally angry at AI. Only I’m allowed to make dumb mistakes like that!
