All of this is a long-winded way to say that I don't trust LLMs, no matter how advanced. Again, just because a series of tokens is the most likely to follow a prompt does not mean the sentence they form is true or even a proper response to the prompt.

However, just because a sentence or series of tokens is the most likely does not mean that it is correct. Indeed, an LLM doesn't even choose the most likely token each time! Doing so, what's known as "temperature 0", makes the LLM's output less random, less "creative".

While I have simplified the steps above (e.g. haven't gone into the attention heads or ANN layers that are trained), I don't think this is an uncharitable description of an LLM. There is no thought in how an LLM produces text, only probability and statistics based upon the data fed into it.

The LLM then, for lack of a better phrasing, rolls a die (i.e. computes a pseudorandom number) to choose which token to place next. The context window shifts forward, and the process continues until an end-of-line token is chosen.
