Palantir didn't have to evade the UK's controls on lobbyists to get astonishing, unminuted access to government ministers and officials, or even to hire them to lobby their colleagues. Why not? Because there aren't any. My column. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

I am breaking the cardinal rule of podcasting (consistency in scheduling) and posting two days early because I'm off on holiday and I don't know what the internet is going to be like.  You'd think the cardinal rule of podcasting would be "Be engaging!" or "Make lots of money!" but you'd be wrong!

I am angry tonight. Because tonight ICE shot a New Yorker. They shot a New Yorker while his five year old child was in the car. ICE makes this city less safe. We want them out. Now.

Had this queued up to listen to for a couple of days. Yesterday I watched my ancient DVD Directors Cut copy, today I listened to the 2 pod eps on my walk. Fantastic listen, thx Ayesha(@everyscififilm.bsky.social), Michael and Scott. Spurred me on to Blu Ray 4K purchase + a reread of Childhood's End.

But I thought you said it is a machine! It had no feelings! 🤪 But yeah. Robots and AI can often represent a whole bunch of things and be read in a whole bunch of ways. Although I do understand I won’t convince everyone. Not even in my own house. 😂

disconcerting. He sounds scary but also vulnerable. We don't know if he's actually afraid or if he's programmed to find a way to complete his mission. I think it's funny because my partner has the exact same reaction to any AI/robot on screen. 😂 Never sentience. How do you feel about Ex-Machina?

In cold hard science perhaps. Reasons for the perhaps. 1. we don't know enough about consciousness and 2. even if it is just a widget it still gives us the most emotion up to this point. Oh and 3. the widget is just as prone to its programming as we are. When HAL's voice gets low it's (1/2)

Thank you, Jordan! I think the “murder” of HAL naturally elicits an emotional/compassionate response in the viewer. It is the most emotional/human we’ve seen anyone throughout the film and also implies HAL has sentience and feeling. The machine more human than the humans. (Plus 1968 not 2026.)

Very interesting. I don’t think we’d need to be in caves but times of war and drought would probably require far more compliance from a social group right? We should ask anthropologists and entomologists. 🐜
