Yesterday's nadir was dangerously bad. Today, with oxygen, morphine and IV antibiotics, I managed to read some stuff online in between sleeping. And video chat... "HELLO, YES THIS IS DOG!"
My dog Luka -- a big black husky-labrador thing -- smiling with his tongue out, on a video call with me at the bottom right. I am receiving supplemental oxygen.

There is a new 20th edition of David Mitchell's Cloud Atlas just published that features a foreword by Gabrielle Zevin. Zevin's foreword has this footnote. It's a shame she can't get my name right or actually even cite the actual piece(s) in question. But hey!
For example, the scholar Paul Martin Eve figured out that there were inconsistencies between the first British edition and the first American edition. Readers of Cloud Atlas don’t miss much.

I receive a commission request from Times Higher Education. I note that they do not pay contributors, and that their consideration in the contract is "promotion".
Four-panel The Oatmeal comic satirising requests for creative work in exchange for “exposure.” In the first panel, one character says, “Hello creative person! Thanks for making that thing!” The creator replies, “You’re welcome. Here’s an invoice.” In the second, the customer rejects it: “An invoice? Never mind that! You’re doing it for the EXPOSURE!” In the third, a hand gives the delighted creator a banknote labelled “EXPOSURE!” and says, “Here’s your EXPOSURE!” The creator replies, “Oh wow that’s a ton of EXPOSURE! Thank you!” In the final panel, captioned “LATER,” the creator tries to pay for food at a street cart with the exposure note, asking, “Do you accept these?” The vendor replies, “haha fuck no.”

The list of NC supporters is a who's who of people never to work with. But the whole thing is wildly dishonest, too. I believe it was not for the plagiarism allegations and criticism that he was suspended! It was for this interview and the explicit racism therein. From the Bylines Times article.
Screenshot of an article excerpt in black serif text on a white background. Several passages are highlighted in yellow. Text reads:
“Five days before Arday was found dead on 14 August, in an interview with the historian David Starkey – himself renowned for a record of derogatory comments about black people – Nathan Cofnas said that Arday was ‘not intelligent in the way that a professor should be’ and that ‘he’s not, like, that retarded that he can’t speak’.
Cofnas said he did not know whether Arday ‘could do addition’, called him ‘completely illiterate mathematically’, and later described him as ‘a black person who seems to be, in this case, literally mentally disabled’.
Cofnas suggested that Arday had merely ‘learned to talk their talk’ and used accusations of racism to repel criticism. His comments fused Arday’s race, autism, and academic standing into a single racialised claim of innate incapacity.”
Yellow highlighting emphasises the quotations “not intelligent in the way that a professor should be”, “a black person who seems to be, in this case, literally mentally disabled”, and the concluding sentence beginning “His comments fused Arday’s race, autism…”Screenshot continuing the same article, in black serif text on a white background, with several passages highlighted in yellow. Text reads:
“Starkey praised Cofnas as the man who had defeated Cambridge’s ‘DEI’ system and celebrated Arday’s resignation by stating that ‘the reason we are both grinning is that we are enjoying vengeance. Good, honest, straightforward and Christian vengeance… we can rejoice together’.
The historian racialised the onslaught, calling Arday a ‘professor draped in laurels as well as dreadlocks’ and repeatedly describing him as stupid.
In 2024, Cofnas was dismissed from his role at Emmanuel College, Cambridge University (though the university faculty continued to sponsor his fellowship), after publishing a blog in which he argued that black people are less intelligent and that, in a meritocracy, the number of black professors at Harvard University ‘would approach zero percent’.”
Yellow highlighting emphasises Starkey’s quotation about “vengeance” and “Christian vengeance”, as well as the claims about black people being less intelligent and the number of black professors at Harvard approaching “zero percent”.

So now, using Zotero, if you ingest a post from my blog, here's the outcome! You might think the Blog Title field is wrong, with that <span> tag in there, but this is to force the correct title casing of the field. Here's how it appears in citations. And the automatically generated PDF is added!
Screenshot of the Zotero desktop application showing a library search for “securely secret”. One matching item is selected: a blog post titled “How can you securely share a secret number with someone, totally in public? Elliptic Curves”, by Martin Paul Eve, with an attached “Full Text PDF” listed beneath it. The right-hand information pane displays the item’s metadata. It identifies the item type as “Blog Post”, with the title “How can you securely share a secret number with someone, totally in public? Elliptic Curves”, author “Eve, Martin Paul”, and blog title shown with some unrendered HTML as “<span class="nocase">eve.gd</span>: Martin Paul Eve”. The date is 2026/08/19 and the DOI is 10.59348/zx6pm-4nd50. The URL is “https://eve.gd/2026/08/19/how-can-you-securely-share-a-secret-number-with-someone-totally-in-public/”. The item was accessed and added on 20/08/2026 at 08:27:50. The short title is “How can you securely share a secret number with someone, totally in public?”, the language is “en”, and the Extra field repeats “DOI: 10.59348/zx6pm-4nd50”. An Abstract section is visible below, beginning: “How do you totally securely share a secret number with someone, utterly in public, without…”
Screenshot of a footnote in a document, numbered “1”. The footnote text is selected/highlighted in grey and reads: “Martin Paul Eve, ‘How Can You Securely Share a Secret Number with Someone, Totally in Public? Elliptic Curves’, *eve.gd: Martin Paul Eve*, 19 August 2026, doi:10.59348/zx6pm-4nd50.”

I rigged up the Jekyll static-site generator that runs my blog to automatically create a PDF of each post. Linked in each article + soon will be in the metadata for Zotero to DL. This is part of my longer plan for automatic repository deposit and update. EPUB next, I think. eve.gd/PDF/2026-08-...
A single-page PDF generated from a blog post, laid out in a clean academic style on a white background. At the top is the header “EVE.GD: MARTIN PAUL EVE,” followed by a horizontal rule. The large centred title reads: “How can you securely share a secret number with someone, totally in public? Elliptic Curves”. Beneath it are the author name, “Martin Paul Eve”; the affiliation “Professor of Literature, Technology and Publishing, Birkbeck, University of London”; and the date “19 August 2026”.

In the centre of the page is a small grey-and-white table explaining elliptic-curve cryptography variables. Its columns are “Variable”, “What it is”, “Privacy”, and “Which party”. Rows describe *k* as Alice’s private key, *G* as a publicly agreed base point on the curve, *kG* as Alice’s public key, *r* as Bob’s temporary private key, *rG* as Bob’s ephemeral public point, and *k(rG) = r(kG)* as the final shared secret calculated independently by Alice and Bob. A caption beneath reads: “Image: A table of elliptic curve variables (set out fully in tabular form in the post) (Martin Paul Eve)”.

At the bottom, separated by another horizontal rule, are citation details: “Cite as: Martin Paul Eve, ‘How can you securely share a secret number with someone, totally in public? Elliptic Curves’, eve.gd: Martin Paul Eve, August 19, 2026,” followed by DOI “https://doi.org/10.59348/zx6pm-4nd50” and the blog-post URL “https://eve.gd/2026/08/19/how-can-you-securely-share-a-secret-number-with-someone-totally-in-public/”.

Trigger warning: severe, distressing ableism. This is the level of discourse we have in the UK around disability. Active calls for the murder of people with disabilities. It's like Aktion T4, again. Credit to @glasgalf.bsky.social for the image.
A Facebook thread called "Should the disabled be killed off?"

Darren Gasson replies: "Depends how disabled they are! If they're proper spa**ed, like Steven Hawkins (sic), then yes!"

Constantine Baines replies: "I actually agree with this, because someone actually has to help him in life and he is stuck in a chair. But there should be an operation in the NHS which can just cure him of whatever he has but that could kill him too."

I have an excellent, knowledgeable and helpful rheumatologist whose first name is Mohammed. He doesn't call himself Dr <Surname> but instead opts for "Dr Mo". This is all very nice and familiar, but I can't help but think of...
Dr. No from the 1962 James Bond film, 'Dr. No'. He is wearing a white up-collared shirt with black gloves on. There are large candles on the left of the image. The character is played by Joseph Wiseman, who, according to Wikipedia, is a "Canadian-born American actor of stage and screen". He is a white male, with a receding hairline but a strong black hair high on the forehead. He has no beard or mustache. He has a sinister air/look!

Just seen this anti-AI image. Really, all it is metaphorising is computer programming. Not even accurate. AI would understand how to complete an incomplete sequence with this input. But regular programming would not. It's the elementary mistake of new programmers: not being utterly precise.
Alt text: Black-and-white three-panel cartoon about AI learning by imitation. In the first panel, a man kneels beside a paint bucket, painting the first few boards of a long white picket fence black, while a featureless humanoid figure with “AI” written on its round head watches. In the second, the man hands the AI the paintbrush and points along the fence, apparently instructing it to continue. In the final panel, the AI is painting the fence itself: it has reproduced the observed pattern, painting repeated fence boards black while leaving others white, rather than simply painting the whole fence.

What, exactly, does she think he can advise on? How to become more Nazi?
Screenshot of a news app showing a politics headline. At the top, a large black serif heading reads "News", with a grey "Hide" link in the top-right corner. Below a thin horizontal line, the section label "Politics" appears in red.

The main headline, in large black serif text, reads: "Badenoch gives former neo-Nazi advisory role after he withdraws as Tory candidate". Beneath the headline is the timestamp: "2h ago".

Below the text is a side-by-side composite image. On the left is a portrait of Kemi Badenoch; a woman wearing a bright royal blue blazer against a blue background, smiling slightly towards the camera. On the right is a bearded man with ginger hair and beard wearing dark sunglasses, a red baseball cap with a white rectangular logo patch, and a black-and-grey plaid overshirt, seated indoors against a plain background.

The overall layout is that of a mobile news application, with the headline occupying most of the upper half of the screen and the paired photographs filling the lower half.

Wow! I backed this project in 2021 and the Blu-ray has just come through my letterbox. It's the Star Trek Voyager: To The Journey documentary! Our names are in the credits. I thought this project was dead so many times. Amazing that they made it to delivery. Applause!
A smiling man - Martin Paul Eve, me! - with short hair, glasses, and a beard sits in front of floor-to-ceiling bookshelves filled with books and ornaments, holding up a Blu-ray case for the Star Trek: Voyager documentary To the Journey. They are wearing a bright blue Rage Against the Machine Learning T-shirt with the band's logo in white. The Blu-ray cover shows the main Voyager cast and reads "Exclusive 3-Disc Backer Edition" at the top and "To the Journey: Looking Back at Star Trek: Voyager" at the bottom. The room is warmly lit, with red curtains to one side, giving the image the feel of a personal library or study.

Cofnas has much proposed evidence. I checked these 2 papers (Arday 2019 and Rollock 2012). The definition of micro-aggressions for example has the same wording as Rollock. But that paragraph cites *the sources she used*, seemingly bypassing her. He then cites her, in the next sentence.
Screenshot of a three-column comparison table from Nathan Cofnas's website headed “Arday (2018) / (p. #)”, “Rollock (2012) / (p. #)”, and “Notes”. Yellow and green highlights mark identical or closely corresponding wording.

Note that Bluesky has truncated my alt text so I cannot transcribe it all. I am sorry.

Arday: “At this juncture within the paper, I employ a personal counter-narrative which has its origins based within the auto-ethnographic paradigm to make visible some of the subtle aspects of racism within an educational context based on a conversation I had with a previous colleague who for the purpose of this narrative will be named Debbie. In particular, I seek to make a direct association between the tools of normative Whiteness and the deployment and consequences of racial micro-aggressions.” (p. 151)

Rollock: “In this paper, I employ counter-narrative to make visible some of the subtle aspects of racism in everyday educational practice. In particular, I seek to make a direct association between the tools of Whiteness, as discussed earlier, as they are played out through the denial of racial difference, the simplification/naivety of the complexities of race, and the deployment and consequences of racial microaggressions.” (p. 520)

Notes: “Some verbatim copying, following the structure of Rollock.”

The alleged evidence of plagiarism is extensive. It is particularly terrible, because this academic has been prominent in Cambridge's DEI efforts. The right wing will be on the march. Nathan Cofnas (known for his highly controversial views) wrote this: ncofnas.com/p/dei-fraud-...
Screenshot of a Nathan Cofnas's website titled “Is Arday a Real Scholar?” Text reads: “As noted, Arday highlights 10 papers as representing his most important work. The chart below indicates for each paper whether it (a) contains plagiarism, (b) fails to employ scholarly methods, and/or (c) was not actually written by Arday.”

A table headed “#”, “Plagiarism”, “No data or scientific analysis”, and “Minimal contribution” alleges:

1. Interviews a convenience sample of three subjects; quotes responses and describes subjective impression.
2. Extensive plagiarism; describes own experience with alleged racism.
3. Entire paper based on plagiarism.
4. “Procedures” taken from another source without attribution; minor plagiarism; at least one subject’s response appears to be fabricated. Interviews a convenience sample of 40 subjects; quotes responses and describes subjective impression.
5. Opinion piece; 1/3 corresponding authors.
6. 1/6 noncorresponding authors; “Contributor’s” note suggests little or no real contribution.
7. “Procedures” taken from another source without attribution. Interviews a convenience sample of 18 subjects; quotes responses and describes subjective impression.
8. Not a research paper (introduction to special issue).
9. Interviews a convenience sample of 43 subjects; quotes responses and describes subjective impression.
10. Describes personal experiences (“autoethnography”); noncorresponding author.

There is a seemingly terrible plagiarism case at Cambridge. Prof Jason Arday. The plagiarism seems, in my opinion, Not Good. But: 'journals & universities across the board “do not regard plagiarism by researchers as actionable”' retractionwatch.com/2026/07/27/c...
Screenshot of the blog of Nathan Cofnas: a three-column comparison table headed “Arday (2015) / (p. #)”, “Zwozdiak-Myers (2009) / (p. #)”, and “Notes”. Alternating yellow and green highlights mark identical or closely corresponding wording.

Arday: “Although student teachers on one course may experience a common programme, how they engage and learn, will vary dependent upon how they interpret what needs to be learned. Student teachers are unique individuals and differ in their personal biographies and prior experiences, disposition to enquiry, cognitive and perceptive abilities, communication, interpersonal skills, adaptability, values and belief systems. Much of this will be underpinned by their distinctive combination of such qualities, characteristics and personal background experiences, with regards to how they think about teaching and learning.” (p. 17)

Zwozdiak-Myers: “Although student teachers on one course, in very large measure, experience a common programme, how they engage and learn from each component will be very different. Student teachers are unique individuals and differ in their personal biographies and prior experiences, disposition to enquiry, cognitive and perceptive abilities, communication and interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence and sensitivity, adaptability and flexibility, personal theories, values and belief systems. Shaped by their unique blend of such qualities, characteristics and personal background experiences, they journey through the process of learning about teaching and of learning about how to become an effective teacher.” (p. 1)

Notes: “Verbatim copying and minor stylistic changes.”

One of my sisters-in-law is currently at the Margate "Kate Bush Most Wuthering Heights Day Ever" event and it looks hilarious 😂 I couldn't attend due to dialysis but I regret this! Haha!
A large outdoor gathering of people dressed almost entirely in red fills a seafront plaza for a mass performance inspired by Kate Bush's Wuthering Heights. Hundreds of participants, many wearing flowing red dresses, skirts, or tops, are spread across stepped terraces and open paving, chatting and preparing to dance. In the foreground, a marshal in a high-visibility orange vest stands among the crowd, while speakers, barriers, and potted plants frame the performance area. Bright yellow and orange pop-up gazebos sit behind the dancers, with a large brick building and blue sky with scattered clouds in the background. The atmosphere is festive and communal, capturing the scale and anticipation of the famous Kate Bush The Most Wuthering Heights Day Ever dance gathering.

Wikipedia's article of the day is the Nile and it's bringing back amazing memories for me. If I could do one thing in my life again, a riverboat down the Nile, in Egypt, would be it.
A picture of me, smiling, wearing a light-coloured wide-brimmed sun hat, long-sleeved shirt, and backpack stands beside a signpost in a sunlit desert landscape of pale limestone hills, in Egypt's Valley of the Kings. One hand rests on my hip as I pose for the camera. The signpost points in two directions and reads: "TOMB OF TUT ANKH AMON NO: 62" on the left arrow and "TOMB OF MERNEPTAH NO: 8" on the right arrow. Low white stone walls border the path in the foreground, while the barren rocky hills rise behind under a cloudless deep blue sky. Warm late-afternoon sunlight casts long shadows across the scene.

I finally read Han Kang's The Vegetarian. Certainly a disturbing, unsettling, and poetic book. Compelling and intriguing, but violent. I have not properly collected my thoughts on it yet but suspect it will remain with me for a while.
Alt text: Book cover for The Vegetarian by Han Kang. Across the top, in bright magenta uppercase text, it reads: “WINNER OF THE 2024 NOBEL PRIZE IN LITERATURE”. Beneath this, the author's name appears in very large bold black capitals: “HAN KANG”.

Below the author's name are two review quotations:

“‘An extraordinary experience’” — Guardian

“‘Terrifying and terrific’” — Lauren Groff

The central artwork is a stylised, close-up image of a pale human torso and shoulder against a dark grey background. The body is decorated with flat, graphic flowers in vivid colours. Three large white daisy-like flowers with bright magenta centres are placed across the shoulder, chest, and lower torso. Four smaller red flowers with black centres—some resembling poppies and others with elongated petals—are scattered around them. The composition is minimalist, with smooth gradients and high contrast between the pale skin and the saturated floral colours.

At the bottom, the title appears in very large bold black uppercase letters: “THE VEGETARIAN”

Directly beneath the English title is the Korean title in bright magenta: “채식주의자”.

Blimey. I am very sorry to hear this. I am glad it was not worse and that you can get on here. Robyn sends her love.
A picture of a dog's face. The dog is called Robyn. She is mostly brown with a black nose. She has small impish bent-over ears.

This morning's writing is the FINAL revisions to this beast. It's. Almost. There!
Text in a heading font that says "Repeat, Reset, Return: The Political Imagination of Star Trek: Voyager" and then, below, "Martin Paul Eve, Birkbeck, University of London"

Oops. I look a bit angrier than I meant to, in this recording!
A picture of me in a red shirt, looking very serious and bordering on angry!

So, they took it off Netflix, so we can't watch it there. Then I found out that my TV is too old to run the Paramount+ app. Well, they don't support it. Grumble. So can't watch it there. So, I took radical action and bought some DVDs.
The DVD boxset of Star Trek: Voyager, with the box at the back and then the boxes for the discs laid out. They all feature Voyager, a starfleet insignia/badge, and the color scheme is black and purple.

I really hate/resent creating slides. It bugs me. A tedious task. But I also realise it is important, particularly for people for whom the visual mode works better. I have struggles to hear, ever since my stroke in 2016, so truly understand that they can be helpful. I just don't like making them.
Slide on a pale blue-grey background titled “Who decides what survives?” under the orange heading “INFRASTRUCTURE POLITICS.” The left-hand text reads: “→ State, university, philanthropic and corporate money each shape the archive differently. → Invisible infrastructure distributes power. → Walled gardens seek capture while preventing totality.” Below is the quotation, “These considerations are ‘essential aspects of distributional justice and planning power’” — Susan Leigh Star. On the right is a photograph of rows of white boxes labelled “archive” on wooden shelves in an ornate, wood-panelled room, with a wall clock visible above them. Slide number 09. Preparing for a talk. It's a cheerful one.
A slide with a picture of a wildfire. It reads "Infrastructures for disaster" and "The future archive is not only technically fragile; it is geologically, legally, financially and climatically exposed.". The slide is black with white text and the wildfire is red.

The post/mail brought a lovely surprise! @hallymk1.bsky.social's new book, in hard copy: The Dissolution of the Universities. Thrilled to receive this. Had started reading the open access copy, but I do love a print book and usually buy them, even if OA. But, in this case, thank you, Richard!
The cover of Richard Hall's book, The Dissolution of the Universities - it has an abstract watercolour painting on the cover of a monastery in ruinsA page spread inside Richard Hall's The Dissolution of the Universities. It shows a picture of our much loved ex-colleague Mike Neary with two educational posters. One is for the Really Open University and has a soviet style feel to it with a hand reaching down to a book, holding a scroll. The other is a more plain white poster with black and red text decrying the influence of money on the university.
