New research today from Brett Fisher and me, showing who left -- and entered -- the Bay over the last dozen years, and how affordability plays into those decisions. We find dramatic increases in homeownership for people leave the Bay. Who is priced out may not be who you think.

🚨New research🚨 Using SNAP helps students finish college. The gains are modest (+4-5%), but SNAP is cost-effective compared to other options and has, of course, the (main) benefit of also keeping students fed and out of poverty. So why make it so hard for students to use SNAP??

I was on KTVU this morn discussing our new data tracking the CA's financial health. Two diverging trends: (1) a resurgent mortgage market, led by large home loans in the Bay, (2) more folks falling behinds on debts, especially student loans. This K-shaped recovery is hurting CA.

Some new evidence from CPL on housing vouchers. Recipients are more likely to desist from crime. But we found no impacts on behavioral health over 20 months.

I co-founded CA Policy Lab in 2017. We do inspiring work and fundraise for our whole budget. Your support means a lot to me, and your $ helps us … predict and prevent homelessness in LA … get eligible families on benefits … test policies that reduce crime and incarceration.

The fed student loan pmt pause is over and a huge number of Californians are late on their loans, much more than before the pandemic. Boomers and Gen X are more often late on payments than younger folks. This comes as personal fin health is at its worst since Great Recession....that's a bad combo.
