Thanks Catherine. Things get even more complicated when one of us is a grant-funded researcher in Finland, one unemployed in UK with an affiliation to a Finnish university and to QMUL, and one with a full-time post in the Netherlands...

ln this case, a unique textual source on #earlymodern colonialism, a prime even if unusual example of lower than middling sort life writing, and the author’s ideas about personal faith and embodiment - just to mention some of the most prominent themes.

Unfortunately, most funding bodies support ‘frontier research’ and new and shiny beginnings, not the often boring final 6-12 month ‘grind’ of finishing something truly valuable to the field.

Of course I forgot to tag #earlymodern. My colleague and me took personal risks to work on this peculiar manuscript text and almost got stuck in Bermuda in March 2020 because of it.

I wish there was a way to support precarious senior scholars who have an important piece of scholarly work to finish. In this case let’s say a scholarly edition of a key text, like Richard Norwood’s (1590-1675) ‘Confessions’, and his manuscript legacy.

‘Silent Histories: Deafness in Early Modern England’

1 October 2026, in-person and online
Society, Culture and Belief, 1500-1800, at the Institute of Historical Research, London

Rosamund Oates shares previously untold stories of deaf men, women and children, showing how their experiences reveal contemporary beliefs about disability and humanity in early modern England. Drawing on archival sources, she will explore how far deaf people were integrated into their communities, and show how Catholic and Protestant churches adapted to include sign language users from the medieval period onwards. Lastly, she will explore the influence that deaf signers had on the broader culture of the period, showing their impact on artists, scientists and philosophers, including Christopher Wren and John Locke.

Venue and booking details will be available soon on our webpage:
