Sánchez may loose the November election but a focus on affordability will not be the reason for that defeat.

Affordability is not an issue that affects mostly the centre-left as the Republican Party in the US is about to find out and as countless centre-right parties n Europe have found out.

I totally agree. Support for the welfare state is based on universal provision. The erosion of welfare state provision is related to the beginning of means-testing welfare provision. If the state wants the rich to pay more taxes, they should also enjoy the benefits of the welfare state.

NEW: According to a bombshell report in the New York Times, Anthropic co-founder Chris Olah threatened to walk out of Pope Leo XIV's Al encyclical launch in May because the pope rejected the idea that machines can be conscious.
Olah's team then privately lobbied the pope's advisers "to take the possibility of model consciousness seriously." Pope Leo XIV held firm.
For months, Anthropic has wined and dined theologians and religious scholars under nondisclosure agreements, hoping they would bless the idea that Claude has moral standing.

I’ve just saw Antonin Baudry’s De Gaulle: Liberté and it’s as brilliant as the first part though clearly more patriotic. Nonetheless it’s good to see a film that shows how Roosevelt was ready to do business with the Vichy regime and occupy France at the end of the war.

Cercas account is not one of glory. He shows that Suarez’s bravest moment - when he sat still in the Cortes when the Tejero fired his gun - was the beginning of his road into political oblivion. And that is the lesson. There is no gratitude in politics. Time is pretty merciless.

Javier Cercas’s Anatomy of a Moment is a tremendous book. Such an incredible account of Spain’s transition to democracy and what an interesting analysis of political leadership. Adolfo Suárez had the character traits that turned him into the handmaid of Spanish democracy.

the fragility of democracy. The play is morally demanding and some members of the audience clearly did not know how to react. But it was strange to hear people laugh at the speech that berated all minorities and told women to behave respectfully and that celebrated the old fascist regime.

Both the book and the TV adaptation showed that the flawed (vain, power-angry) but the determined and talented Adolfo Suárez, Santiago Carrillo and Gutiérrez Mellado understood and did what was necessary (including betraying their own) to ensure that Spain became a democracy after Franco’s death.

Loved the adaptation of Javier Cercas’s book to the TV screen and which was show at the London Spanish Film Festival. What a gripping account of the failed coup attempt of 1981 that almost derailed Spain’s democracy. It is also a fascinating study of power and political leadership.

I’ve just been to an event organised by a big think-tank with a big public intellectual and the big heads only discussed banalities as if they were bold ideas. I would start by a simple rule for elites: read more books; serious books. They may learn about how normal people think and talk..
