It's not exactly a short chapter, and it's fairly dense. But each section is self-contained, so easy to pick and choose! Start with the end if you'd like. Or just read the one section that interests you.

Then a frontier section: the economics of AI for clean innovation (and the energy demands of AI itself), critical minerals (supply, geopolitics, substitution, recycling), and the global winners and losers from the clean energy transition.

A full section on adaptation innovation. Theory, empirical evidence on climate damages and adaptation tech, and how adaptation interacts with mitigation. Smaller literature than mitigation, growing fast.

From there we review the connections between climate policy and technology, with a big focus on industrial policy. It has made a huge comeback, and we try to think through what have been seen as big successes and failures so far.

On policy, one thing we highlight up front, and perhaps unsurprisingly, most climate-policy articles in AEA journals are on market-based instruments. But the most common policies in practice are non-market regulation.

Companion web app for green-patent trends: patent-green-trends.streamlit.app. Useful for checking whether your favourite clean tech is actually accelerating, plateauing, or quietly dying. You can filter by authority or granted/international/foreign-oriented/highly-cited patents.

Then a long stock-taking of the clean tech landscape. A taxonomy of what counts, the main data sources and their limits, and the actual patenting trends: the takeoff (1990–2010), the under-discussed dip (2011–2014), and the rise of China since.

We start with the fundamentals, both micro and macro. On the micro side, the menu of market failures across the innovation chain (figure below). On the macro side, directed technical change models, and how they relate to IAMs and learning curves.

We're hoping it'll be useful for beginners and experienced researchers alike. PhD students wanting a map of the field, and people from adjacent areas who are maybe interested in climate innovation but aren't quite sure where to start.

One part I particularly enjoyed was getting into the weeds of battery chemistries. LFP, NMC, sodium-ion, solid-state. Very different mineral footprint, and also business cases. I kept getting confused about which is which... so made this table (as of mid-2025)

Innovation can cut both ways. It can raise supply through better extraction, processing, and recycling. It can also raise OR decrease demand, through new applications and new chemistries. So, policy will have to think about both directions at once.

Innovation matters in this story, in more than one way. The figure below sketches the typology we use across stages of the value chain and types of innovation.

If the clean energy transition was supposed to free us from the complicated economics and politics of resources... it may just reopen a host of questions; just change which resource we're asking questions about.

One thing has stuck with me from writing it. Critical minerals are starting to look like the future oil and gas of a decarbonised world. Concentrated supply, geopolitical exposure, contested governance, growing demand.

The vast majority of respondents believe published SCC values to be downward biased. The average "best-guess" SCC ($142 per ton CO2) is more than twice their literature estimate ($60 per ton). Experts substantially underestimate published SCC, at least compared to our findings.
