6/ Don't let the subtitles intimidate you. International cinema isn’t a different language; it’s just a different expression of the same shared recognition. Some might sarcastically call it a masterpiece—we just call it a great conversation. Listen to the full episode here: youtu.be/75O0VBqTTIs?...

5/ Whether it’s a Volvo on a Swedish highway or a stagecoach in the desert, the weights and measures of the story remain the same. The "liturgy" of the road is universal. If you appreciate the craftsmanship of the 1940s, you’re already part of the agreement.

4/ We dive into how Bergman uses the most American structure there is: the Road Trip. It’s an agreement with the viewer that every mile on the road is actually a mile into the character’s soul.

3/ Case in point: Wild Strawberries stars Victor Sjöström. Before this, he was a literal architect of the Hollywood contract, directing silent masterpieces like The Wind. He didn’t just join the liturgy; he helped write the book.

2/ A lot of people skip "foreign films" because they think the grammar will be alien. But cinema is a contract—a shared recognition of what symbols mean. If you understand a Hitchcock reveal or a John Ford landscape, you already speak the language.
