This year's El Niño continues its climb into uncharted waters; Niño3.4 region anomalies are now at a 3.4C above normal (how fitting!), higher than any prior El Niño event on record. September monthly Niño3.4 anomalies also set a record at 2.9C (beating 2015 and 1877's 2.75C).

A paper in Scientific Data presents how the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets mass has changed since the 1970s through 2023, reporting that it has lost 11.3 trillion tonnes of ice since 1979. ⚒️🌎🧪
go.nature.com
Mass balance of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets from the 1970s to 2023 - Scientific Data
The Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets are major drivers of global mean sea level rise and are predicted to continue to do so in the future. However, they also represent the largest source of uncertainty in projections of future sea level rise making robust estimates of observed ice sheet mass changes critical. Here, we compare and combine 42 independent estimates of ice sheet mass balance derived from satellite observations of temporal changes in ice sheet flow, volume, and gravitational attraction to determine the ice sheet mass balance from 1972 (Greenland) and 1979 (Antarctica) until 2023. We then use regional climate models to partition the total mass balance into contributions associated with surface mass balance and ice dynamical imbalance. The ice sheets lost 11,309 ± 565 billion tonnes of ice between 1979 and 2023, with glacier dynamical imbalance driving 84% of the ice loss and surface mass balance the remainder. This dataset can be used to track the contribution of the ice sheets to sea level rise and constrain projections of future sea level rise.

<sigh> Let's go over this, again. Climate change is a threat to food security. It negatively affects quality and quantity of available food and, ho, by the way, it increases the risk of multi-region crop failure. 🧪 Link: iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/…
Simulation workflow: (1) Draw the number of simultaneously failing regions based on Gaupp et al.; (2) sample affected regions and crop-specific production failures; (3) construct forcing time series; (4) run the Agrimate model to obtain price and consumption responses. Repeat the workflow for each crop (wheat,
maize, soybean) and climate condition (historical, +2◦C), generating 10,000 simulations per setup.

Good morning! Monthly climate change indicator update time... 🫣 + Global temperature: 📈 + Carbon dioxide (CO₂): 📈 + Methane (CH₄): 📈 + Nitrous oxide (N₂O): 📈 Download at zacklabe.com/climate-chan...
This graphic shows four line graph time series and each are monthly from January 1984 through August 2026. The first graph is a 12-month running mean of global mean surface temperature anomalies. Anomalies are computed relative to a 1991-2020 baseline using ERA5 data. The second graph is monthly carbon dioxide abundance. The CO2 graph is the Keeling Curve. Current levels are 428 ppm. The third graph is monthly global methane abundance. Current levels are 1939 ppb. The fourth graph is monthly global nitrous oxide abundance. Current levels are 340 ppb. The three greenhouse gases show seasonal cycles and long-term increasing trends using data from NOAA GML. The global mean surface temperature anomaly record also exhibits decadal variability and a long-term increasing trend. All graphs are rising and shown in four different colors, including white, yellow, orange, and pink.
