New paper! Are universal models of human behavior really universal? Universal mobility models can work remarkably well on average while systematically failing for some socioeconomic groups. Accurate for whom? academic.oup.com/pnasnexus/ar... Led by Ludovico Napoli with @martonkarsai.bsky.social
The figure is taken from the paper. It shows the maps of different cities in the US with areas (census tracts) colored proportionally to how bad/good the universal model describes the behavior of people in that area. The patterns show that model precision localizes around specific (low-income) areas

New research in 𝘕𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘊𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴 finds that urban social mixing depends less on where people live and more on where they go each day. “Most of the mixing…is because of what [people] do,” says @estebanmoro.bsky.social of NetSI’s Social Urban Networks Lab. news.northeastern.edu/2026/08/31/i...

Researcher investigates how people get into the urban mix
Do modern cities still offer the opportunity to meet people from different income levels, social and ethnic groups and backgrounds?

(from linkedin) Thanks, @manlius.bsky.social I know your work and, relevant, but I don’t think it is similar. We have long been working on detecting and mitigating various biases in mobility data, and this paper focuses on a particular bias: the daily temporal representation of people’s behavior.

Who shows up in mobility data — and when — matters. Comparing mobility data with ATUS, we find systematic time-of-day biases across demographic groups, and show how temporal post-stratification corrects them and changes downstream results.

[New paper!] Mobility data are incredibly powerful, but also come with a long list of well-known biases (sampling, coverage, demographics, behavioral, etc.). In the paper, we survey them all and then zoom in on one that has been surprisingly underexplored: temporal bias. arxiv.org/abs/2601.22330

Great paper! In our work www.nature.com/articles/s41... with individual-level mobility, we found that much of isolation comes from what people do (their activity patterns) more than from where they live or demographics. Aggregated data (like SafeGraph) tends to blur that behavioral dimension.
