I seem to speak up more on the bad days, and against that tendency let me just say that this is one of the good ones. The last month was one of the lowest and most difficult I’ve had in a long time but it has actually let up. You truly never know when mercy will arrive or where from

antisemitic and transphobic brainworms seem to be synergistic, can think of many other examples of this, with different initial political trajectories, through marxism, green politics, anarchism, free software ideology, esotericism. I think the common mechanism is a breakdown of epistemic trust

in 1627 someone published a text called 'Woe to Drunkards' with an honest to goodness Chad knight vs. Virgin fop meme
"In a woodcut on the title-page of 'Woe to Drunkards,' a sermon preached by Samuel Ward, of Ipswich, 1627, the vices of that age are typically contrasted with the virtues of a former one. In the upper compartment we are shown what men were of old by the open Bible, the foot in the stirrup, and the hand grasping the lance; while in the lower, the degeneracy of their descendants is typified by the leg and foot, decorated with a broad silk garter and a large rosette; by cards and dice, and a hand holding at the same time a lighted pipe and a drinking cup with a cockatrice in it. Twenty years afterwards, these types would have been more strictly applicable, with the inscriptions merely transposed."

I find it rather interesting that memory of the DDR or of the immediate period of unification doesn't seem to be reflected in voting preferences. when the wall came down, the current 45-59 group were kids or young adults, and the 60-69 group were in their late twenties or early thirties.

Le Garçu (1995, Maurice Pialat)
Le Garçu1995
Watched 04 Sep 2026

jackie_ess’s review published on Letterboxd:
First viewing. Very painful portrait of a certain kind of woundingly narcissistic parenting. Gérard courts his four year old son with toys and reckless fun, but something is deeply wrong. Because you know, one has to let them take you for granted, in a sense not to see you. This is often talked about in terms of the burden of parenting: the stress, the work, the expense, losing sleep, catching every cold, losing the independence of your relationship to culture. But it is something else too, the emptiness of Gérard's life, his failure to connect emotionally or to live truly. He wants parenting to be an answer to that emptiness, and maybe it is, but he makes the boy oddly over-responsible for it. He has a need for an intense mirroring, to see that love coming back would in a sense be the only proof of his humanity, that he went beyond earning or buying or provoking love but really lived. The deep sadness of the film is in those moments when little Antoine seems to look back and feel his own insufficiency to the task. Children can love their parents, but not in this way which knows the void in them. In those moments, Gérard passes on his emptiness and lack of identity. Who will the boy grow up to be?.

Precise final image: Gérard eating ham through the glass, and can't taste it, because he is outside, it is already night, nose clownishly pressed to the glass, fogging it, and the boy is distracted. Wave. Walk away and return to drink in silence, somehow simultaneously. No way to say goodbye, and every moment seems to be one.

Of course it's a bit amazing that Pialat lived to make a film soundtracked by Bjork and featuring Rhythm of the Night. Wish he'd lived a thousand years. Rather than tragedy, myth, dreams, or science, one wishes psychoanalysis could have begun with his films.

The Diary of a Chambermaid (Radu Jude, 2026)
The Diary of a Chambermaid2026

Watched 30 Aug 2026

jackie_ess’s review published on Letterboxd:
Radu Jude pulls the Mirbeau material in two directions: one is gonzo experimental theatre, which carelessly gets its amateur actors deported and tramples their consent (the brief dialogue about intimacy coordination, unbelievable). Meanwhile, Gianina works for a new bourgeois family, who are so self-conscious, so ashamed, and what is the result of that self-consciousness or shame? Demanding to have it salved by their social inferiors, who they treat the exact same except that they've added this new job. Make me feel better about what this is. Make me feel like it isn't. Some rather harsh "emotional labour" in its original sense. So the demands to sit at the table with them (yet dinner must still be ready), so the pseudo-interest in Romanian folklore (but the stories must have happy endings and not disturb the children). In the scene where they force Gianina to talk about Ukraine and watch facebook war footage I actually shouted at the screen.

RJ is operating at full power here, and I was happy to see in the film elements that are only sometimes there or might be presented conditionally, with more irony: the careful observation of family tensions as in The Happiest Girl in the World and the inward dimension as in Kontinental '25 and Do Not Expect Too Much From The End Of The World.

Beautifully and sharply cut, with each ending, not only the last one, seeming to remind you that you have just seen the image from which all the rest could unfold. One of the best films by one of the best living.

Everytime (2026, Sandra Wollner)
Everytime2026
Pulled in elements of L’Avventura, Clouds of Sils Maria, and Requiem for a Dream, with some of what is frustrating about each. I thought a few things were captured very well: the boyfriend who expresses his guilt through becoming more dependent, and the girl on her phone actually being more connected to deep emotion and memory than the apparently more “in the moment” grownups, who miss everything. I thought the use of Minecraft was very beautiful though I never played that game it reminded me of the weird quality of memories of the worlds of myst, zelda, and nethack. I found it a bit dismal at times that experience doesn’t speak for itself, all effective change in perspective seems mediated by some kind of trip. A trip which might kill you or which might permanently crack reality and the narrative of the film. Or the camera does it, gives you a moment like in “clouds” or a moment of dissociated bright-out. That seems perhaps honest to these characters but really sad. Afterwards marveled that we had come so far from that awful early scene. Captures Berlin quite well. Mostly it happens slower.

I generally disagree with the view that one shouldn't debate racists. but I don't think one ought to agree to debate on their terms. the fact is, anti-racist consensus is not a once-and-for-all thing, nor is any other kind of progress. it has to be re-articulated in each generation.

last year I wrote to a particular hero of mine. we wrote back and forth a bit but I was shy to mention my writing. I thought, "because of how I have lived I am ashamed to approach you as my whole self, yet if I had lived any other way, I might not have needed your work or been able to see it."

a "woke 1" argument which I saw a lot: that discursive norms, as well as the policing of affects, produced epistemic injustice. who is it easier to write off as toxic, infantile, superstitious, etc? so far so good, but the takeaway was often a crude reversal: that it's brave to be rude

apparently the left is going to try to substitute the moon for the sun this evening and expect normal people to go along with it. what problem is blotting out the sun even supposed to solve? no clear messaging. it's almost worse if it works than if it doesn't. how did we get here?
