But on "The Cool, Cool River" he sounds weakened again, he stretches lines out and slows them down drastically, speaks parts where he sang fast in the original, strains to reach the high notes, not really sure how to account for the difference.

This version of "René and Georgette Magritte With Their Dog After The War" uses the same arrangement as the rerecording on In The Blue Light, which I actually prefer to the original version, and oddly enough his voice sounds great here, none of those signs of wear and tear we hear elsewhere.

This Paul Simon live album is the first time age has had a noticeable effect on his voice, at times he's still able to hit the old high notes (much of "Slip Slidin' Away") but at other times he just sounds weary, exhausted- "Graceland" is drastically reconfigured to avoid straining his voice.

I think you're confused, YouTube, I'm very clearly NOT the target market for this. 🫤
Ad from my YouTube home page showing a silver-haired anime girl wearing a black bra and panties with a pink-collared white jacket pulled down to expose her left shoulder; she's sitting in a pink armchair in front of a desk with a computer monitor showing three more anime girls. There's also a keyboard, a mouse on a mousepad, and three cans of an unidentified drink behind the mousepad. Yet another anime girl appears in a square app-icon-style frame to the left, above the words:

Same! I thought "this is getting kind of repetitive" and then I realized I could actually click the yellow diamond. 😅

One of the most disconcerting moments of living in this timeline of the world in the U.S. is that A LOT of people in this country keep acting like there's a special line that needs to be crossed for fascism to *arrive.* The reality is that we are CURRENTLY living under Federal fascism. NOW.

Carly singlehandedly disproving my longstanding "pop albums should only be 40 minutes long" belief, you CAN make a 2-hour pop album if you've got consistently great material, and she seems to have an endless supply of it at the moment.

I soured on him during the open-carry fiasco, good to know I haven't missed out on anything important.

Also it's funny to me that there was a version of the album released with just one of these bonus tracks (which I think started out as a supposedly Japanese-CD-exclusive track) shortly after the original release in a blatant attempt to juice the first-week sales numbers.

Esme Rylan @esmerylan.northsky.social · 7h
On the other hand, I'm still going to listen to all of it again because the album's great anyway, who cares if it's now almost 2 hours long. 😝

For some reason I thought the bonus tracks for the Carly Rae Jepsen album were their own separate album, I didn't realize it was going to be four new songs at the end of each of the "discs" of the original album.

[A meme collage centered on semiotics, self-reference, and the use–mention distinction. The background features the Wikipedia entry for "Use–mention distinction" alongside Ferdinand de Saussure's semiotic sign diagram showing "Signifié" over "Signifiant". In the center, Yui Hirasawa from K-On! holds a pipe in one hand and René Magritte's painting "The Treachery of Images" ("Ceci n'est pas une pipe") in the other. To the left, logician Kurt Gödel with glowing red eyes is paired with M.C. Escher's woodcut "Dragon"; to the right is philosopher W.V.O. Quine, also sporting glowing red eyes. Large white text overlaid across the bottom reads "MENTIONING MENTIONED".]

Anyway, the restaurant had both breakfast and lunch so we stuck with the breakfast items, I got an omelette and one of my nephews got something called a "Godfather Breakfast Bowl", I didn't ask any questions.

Back home now. My sister arrived while I was still at B&N and we did some grocery shopping at the Harris Teeter next door before my nephews got there, apparently it's going to be bad weather this weekend and she wanted to make sure I had everything I needed.

Now I just have to figure out where I left off in this book... 🤔
Paperback copy of Cultish: The Language of Fanaticism by Amanda Montell, sitting on a café table at B&N. It shows a black-and-white UFO partly obscured by bright colored lines and shapes (light blue, purple, orange, pink, yellow) reminiscent of 1960s pop art designs.

Looks like we're having brunch rather than breakfast, so in the meantime I'm at the B&N where I always used to go, rather than the one they remodeled and shrunk by at least a third.

He's the only one where this is the case. For Dave and for Jarrod & Brandi in both episodes, they've done the usual "make up bullshit values and show them onscreen" thing.

Anyway, I got here in time for the main Storage Wars series block, and in both episodes Barry hasn't even tried to figure out the value of what's in his lockers while going through them. Is this a recurring trope?

"Champagne" so clearly should have been the lead single, just hearing that one song recontectualized the ones I'd heard in advance and made it clear what Remi's doing on this album. Her personality is very much still there, and her voice has never sounded better.

Esme Rylan @esmerylan.northsky.social · 13h
Anyway, I started listening to Remi Wolf's new album on my way to Planet Fitness, and I should never have had any doubts, the single choices didn't even hint at how fucking great this record is.

Anyway, the top spot is probably going to be either Avalon Emerson or Andrew Sa at this point, but if you remember the last couple years you know it's a bad idea for me to make any sort of declarations with 2 months left (really, From The Pyre should've been my number 1 last year).

I'm once again considering not even doing a ranked album list this year because I can't choose between multiple options for the best album of the year, I can't take this "worst year in decades" shit seriously.

I don't know why I look at the AOTY subreddit, the userbase's typical way of thinking is so alien to how I listen to and think about music. "[2026 is] the weakest in decades if you base it on charts"... then DON'T FUCKING DO THAT? Just listen to the music and make up your own fucking mind?

I've noticed a lot of shorter classical releases lately, going through the new releases on Apple Music there's a Lang Lang EP that's 13 minutes and a couple of other sub-30-minute recordings and I wonder why this is happening.

As a lifelong Mac user, the frustrating thing for me is that it feels like Apple's made finding the ways to dig in much more difficult- they're still there, I know how to get to them, but I'd imagine someone new to MacOS wouldn't know, or would just stick to the App Store walled garden.

I just noticed Tapmusic didn't include the cover art for the Gabriel Durliat Ravel album, whereas Songstitch did find that one. Still better than having a completely inaccurate album cover for the Costello & The Attractions songs.

Esme Rylan @esmerylan.northsky.social · 18h
The Elvis Costello box set gave the 5x5 chart generators trouble this week, thanks to Apple Music's split album credits for the different band configurations. Songstitch plugged the art for Trust in for one of them so I'm going with Tapmusic instead, it just left that one with no cover art.
5x5 chart of my most-listened albums of the past week, MASSIVELY fucked up by split artist credits for Elvis Costello's My Aim Is True 40th anniversary box set.

Top row: Andras Schiff; Elvis Costello; Victoria Monet; Elvis Costello & Clover; James Carter, Cyrus Chestnut, Ali Jackson, & Reginald "Swingdoom" Veal (all the chart generators AND Apple Music cut off poor Reginald's name, I had to Google the album credits)
Second row: Elvis Costello & The Attractions; Gabriel Durliat; Madonna; Dave Holland; Suzanne Vega (Songs In Red And Gray)
Third row: Carsten Dahl Experience; Quadeca; Kacey Musgraves; Marilyn Crispell & Anders Jormin; Per och Olof
Fourth row: Adéla; Avalon Emerson; Johnny Marr; Miranda Lambert; Suzanne Vega (Lover, Beloved: Songs from An Evening With Carson McCullers)
Fifth row: Ayumi Tanaka, Thomas Morgan, & Thomas Strønen; Robbie Basho; Elvis Costello & Flip City; Swans; Henry Threadgill, Vijay Iyer, & Dafnis Prieto
