[Entirely serious:] I fear we will have to sanction the BBC in Woke II until they get with the fuckin' program as part of a broader "get your fucking shit together, Brits" sanction package on the various cartoonishly evil powerful figures in the UK government.

Look I'm sorry I'm banging on about this fuckin tree thing but it's so fucking infuriating to live in DC and see this shit all the time. That all aside: why the hell is "oh well this plan was on the books since *Trump's first term*" offered up as "oh so it's definitely unrelated to Trump's plans"?
From https://www.politico.com/news/2026/10/12/golf-course-trees-hearing-donald-trump

"Lands, who said he was testifying Monday from a vehicle in a parking lot, said his instructions came from Greg Wischer, a senior official at the Department of Interior. But Wischer could not be located Monday, so Reyes recessed the hearing with plans to reconvene Tuesday.

Griess said the removal of the trees by a force that included both contractor personnel and regular Park Service employees dispatched to Washington for America 250-related events had nothing to do, to the best of his knowledge, with Trump’s desire to revamp the public golf course to a national-level attraction. Instead, Griess said, it was part of a park service plan from 2019 to restore several golf courses in Washington to their original landscaping.

However, Reyes said she was disturbed that acting park service Director Jessica Bowron submitted a declaration to the court last week under penalty of perjury that made no mention of any plan to bring down hundreds of trees. Bowron’s statement was dated Oct. 6, one day after senior Interior Department and park service officials convened a meeting to press forward with the tree clearing."

I'm not entirely unsympathetic to the potential "this makes the library less accessible to people with cat allergies" angle but it really seems like the councilmembers here just ...don't like cats the cat was unpredictable? it did cat things? should we call the fuckin' pound, lady?
Librarian had permission, with conditions
City Administrator Julie Fisher said the city librarian had permission allowing a library cat, but the cat would have to go if anyone complained. Fisher said she was not notified of Pip’s arrival.

“The city has better things to do than deal with a cat so I determined the cat experiment to be a failure,” Fisher said.

Fisher said she received multiple complaints of Pip’s presence in the library.

“We now have received several complaints of the cat biting, scratching, jumping on, climbing on not only patrons but employees of the city in ways that are not acceptable, they’re not predictable, they’re not welcome,” Fisher said.

oh JD-"group chats with teenage groypers"-VANCE figured this one out? the man with negative political instincts? i think a lame-duck attempt at impeaching Hegseth over everything might actually get off the ground if Hegseth charges forward on this
"Vice President JD Vance said Friday he would not watch the planned livestream of the December firing squad execution of Nidal Malik Hasan — and even questioned whether a livestream would happen at all.

Speaking to reporters, the vice president, the nation’s highest-ranking Catholic, questioned whether the execution would actually be made public but said in any case he wouldn’t watch it. Hasan was convicted of killing 13 people at Fort Hood in Texas in 2009."

holy fucking shit the voter enthusiasm gap is i think bigger than we might even be thinking, look at that "extremely motivated to vote" spread compared to '22
Heading into the midterm home stretch Democratic voters are more invested, motivated than GOP voters
Among registered voters who support the __ for the House of Representatives this November, % who …

Say it really matters which party wins:
Oct 2018: 75D/74R
Oct 2022: 76R/72D
Oct 2026 78D/69R

Have given the election 'a lot' of thought

October 2022: 49R/38D
October 2026: 50D/36R

Are extremely motivated to vote:

October 2022: 58R/56D
October 2026: 63D/46R

Jesus christ even the headline undersells it SHE WAS STRAIGHT UP SOLICITING BRIBES TO TELL THE IRS TO DROP AUDITS
That same month, Guilfoyle sent a congratulatory note to Long after his confirmation as IRS commissioner. She attached a letter Deters had written outlining his tax dispute: “Don Jr. and I are very close with Eric Deters and his wife and I know he sent you a letter,” she wrote. “I am hoping I know how busy you are that you could give some time and attention to it.”

Two days later, Deters sent her a photo of a printed memo addressed to her: “I have paid you $300,000 over the years,” he wrote. “As of this memo, I have not received one favor. I am not naive or a sucker. I need results.”

In response, she told Deters to “stop papering all these things. It’s really dangerous.”

“Just call me on signal,” she wrote.

As for Long, she would call him the next day, she assured Deters. “I wrote him a very nice message. Told him how important it was that you’re close to me and to don.”

“Also very privately,” she continued, “if you write an email or a text about, l’m gonna kill you cause I love you but you’re so out of control.”

That afternoon she texted an update: Long had written her back.

“BOOM,” she added.

I like how this answer in and of itself,-even IF taken at face value-is still completely disqualifying. If you don't know how the fucking Supreme Court actually functions as a political body and don't know how to ascertain how they'll rule on things then you have no fucking business confirming them!
"Asked whether she believed Kavanaugh “lied” to her about his abortion rights stance when she was considering his confirmation, she did not go that far.

“I do not feel that he lied, but I think that he should not have said it was settled law because to me that meant it would not be overturned. But to be fair, you cannot ask a nominee how they might vote in a hypothetiocal case,” she said."

a Dukakis moment if i've ever seen one, but entirely earned in Vivek's case, instead of a "who cares?" in the original sense also, never forget Dukakis's response in 2008 when asked about the tank photo op and if it was what beat him:
"Bush used that image in an ad describing you as soft on defense. The irony is that you supported a buildup in conventional weapons like tanks.
I was at the tank factory to make that point, obviously. Now, should I have been in the tank? Probably not, in retrospect. But these days when people ask me, "Did you get here in a tank?" I always respond by saying, "No, and I've never thrown up all over the Japanese prime minister." But, you know, things happen."

From, of all things, an old/archived *Cornell University* page on the topic, and uh BOY IS THIS A RICH TEXT:
archived 2014 Cornell University website page from the Office of the Dean of Students:
"HomeGreek LifeAbout Our OfficeThe Power of 2%
The Power of 2%
From an article in the New York Times:

Since the founding of the American College Fraternity movement in 1776, fraternities have grown to symbolize leadership, independence, scholastic achievement and service to their various campuses and communities. Fraternity men represent a very small percentage, only 2% of the male population in the United States. However, that 2% is a very powerful group of individuals. Fraternity men have gone on to hold many of the top positions in our nation, from the business world to the political arena.

Approximately 80% of the top executives of Fortune 500 companies are fraternity men. 76% of current United States Senators and Congressmen are fraternity men. 100 of 158 cabinet members since 1900 have been fraternity men. 40 of 47 Supreme Court Justices since 1910 have been fraternity men All but two United States Presidents since 1825 have been fraternity men.

It is certainly no surprise that today's college and university students express a keen interest in the Greek system. The opportunities are endless and the benefits speak for themselves. Each year thousands of young men enter the working world with the competitive advantage of fraternity experience and alumni contacts."

Bush! 2006! Levels!
from Axios [ed. note: pause for booing, sounds of disgust, hurled rotten fruit]: "The environment is starting to rival the second midterm election of President George W. Bush's tenure in 2006, the consultant said, amid the Iraq war and the botched response to Hurricane Katrina. Republicans lost control of both chambers after losing 30 House seats and six Senate seats.

"The numbers are somewhere between shitabulous and craptastic," a top Republican advising several federal races across the country told Axios. "It looks worse than 2018 now. Trump is heading to Bush 2006 levels.""

Wikipedia excerpt from Rehnquist's page: "In a memorandum to Jackson about Terry v. Adams,[31] which involved the right of blacks to vote in Texas primaries where a non-binding white-only pre-election was being used to preselect the winner before the actual primary, Rehnquist wrote:

The Constitution does not prevent the majority from banding together, nor does it attain success in the effort. It is about time the Court faced the fact that the white people of the south do not like the colored people. The Constitution restrains them from effecting this dislike through state action, but it most assuredly did not appoint the Court as a sociological watchdog to rear up every time private discrimination raises its admittedly ugly head.[8]

In another memorandum to Jackson about the same case, Rehnquist wrote:

several of the [Yale law professor Fred] Rodell school of thought among the clerks began screaming as soon as they saw this that 'Now we can show those damn southerners, etc.' [...] I take a dim view of this pathological search for discrimination [...] and as a result I now have something of a mental block against the case.[32]

Nevertheless, Rehnquist recommended to Jackson that the Supreme Court should agree to hear Terry."
