Incredibly hard and graphic watch, but absolutely necessary to see what the animals of Hamas did on October 7th. No v/o narration, just videos from Nova festival attendees and body cams of Hamas pigs literally hunting people down and murdering them in cold blood. Assholes called it "resistance."

if Tucker Carlson made Ted Cruz look like an idiot, and Jacob Rees-Mogg made Tucker Carlson look like an idiot, and Barry Ferns made Jacob Rees-Mogg look like an idiot, it logically follows that if Barry Ferns was to talk to Ted Cruz for more than five seconds, Ted Cruz would explode messily

Give me romance and don't condescend to me. And keep your lit fic which continually thinks its reinventing the wheel. Stop pretending people being depressed and breaking up (or 'discovering reality') is more innovative than people navigating human relationships and love. Just stop.

Romance CAN do almost any fucking thing. Having a romance plot does not mean a book isn't full of other details, other enquiries. There is no other genre that cares so much and so deeply about human relationships in all their forms.

Romances are ABOUT so many things because we have all different settings, time periods and situations. A romance can be a reflection on monarchical rule, it can part of a reassessment of the NHS's role in British life, it can be a historical reflection on Britain's colonial past.

People can see a bad use of the trope from a mile away. One that doesn't engage with the way the same trope has been repeated, parodied, ironised. That doesn't realise you're engaging with an existing conversation. That doesn't care about what is behind or underneath the trope.

'Only one bed' is a great way of exploring a range of relationship issues and dynamics. People like it because of the forced proximity or intimacy it produces, because of the acknowledged fun of the trope, of the narrative gymnastics that can occur to make it happen...

Acknowledge that people are interested not in reading the same thing over and over again, but in exploring one thing from an almost infinity of approaches an angles. Of exploring different facets of the thing itself. Of making a familiar thing new, of using to explore different ideas or realities.

This! Great explanation of why Romance matters & why tropes aren't a sign of bad writing. Reviews which identify tropes in fiction as proof that they're badly written only prove that they're bad criticism. All fiction has tropes in it! No matter the genre! Otherwise it'd be unreadable!

Slowly, the Brazilians were learning the same lesson as other American allies around the world: The United States of America is no longer the entity they knew. And American power is no longer deployed solely by trained diplomats and reliable officials, working through state channels. Informal envoys, private companies, online grifters, and hardened ideologues both inside and outside the government matter more. Unlike their predecessors, these people do not talk about spreading democracy, and don’t want to build long-term relationships. They don’t care about America’s reputation. They are deploying the tools of American diplomacy and government for their own purposes, to promote their own business interests or their own ideological goals, because, suddenly, they can.

And each trope, can we be rethought, refigured, played out in a thousand different ways, which questions, challenges, reinforces ideas previously explored. You can have more complex conversations precisely because you're entering a pre-existing discussion.

Engaging with an existing trope or plot pattern, isn't about simplicity or robot formulas. It's rather about an acknowledgement of the history of your field, a constant intertextual conversation with (or against) the meanings that have built up around certain tropes.

In other words, these are existing forms that you engage with and use, but this is not an act of plagiarism or repetition. Instead, through iteration (repetition) and variation, these 'strong forms' 'accumulate connotations' across the genre. They become richer, more complex.

The note that genre fiction (in their case the Gothic) uses 'strong forms' (familiar patterns and tropes) which 'easily lend themselves to codification in terms of conventions or 'rules' of composition. They are constraints authors take upon themselves.'

Oates' idea of romance is that of a repeatable formula, with repetition and similarity equating with a lack of value or interest. The implicit belief is that value is only found in originality (and the implicit belief that other forms of fiction - literary and genre perhaps - are truly 'original')

I read romance, I teach romance, I value romance. And I am always slightly confounded at the difference between what people think it is and what it actually is. The idea that a whole subset of novels dedicated to intimate human relations are indifferent are going to be simple and worthless? Weird.

Great insights from @hahussain on the patriarchal interference of Western Leftists in ME Arab Muslim development. Defending Barghouti is a prime example. The Left needs to stop superimposing its own narrative onto the Arab and Muslim search for its own progress. x.com/hahussain/st...
My biggest problem with the American and European Left is that they've injected themselves into a Middle East that they are totally ignorant about (now releasing Barghouti has become all the rage). The Left super imposes its narrative (anti-imperialism, anti-capitalism, etc) on different Arab and Muslim problems.

Long before Israel or even the Zionist movement existed, Arabs and Muslims were shocked when they saw how far advanced the West had become. The date set for this shock is usually pinned to Napoleon's landing in Egypt in 1798.

Since then, Arab Muslims have been scratching their heads in pursuit of reforming their society to allow for modernization. Land and sovereignty are never part of such sociological and anthropological discussions, and rightly so. The concept of "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" does not require a defined piece of land. Sovereignty is a more pressing issue for cultures that face extinction through assimilation (Jews, Christians, Kurds, Assyrians, Copts) without attaining such sovereignty. Half a billion Arabic-speaking Muslims with 21 sovereign governments do not face a similar threat. The Arabs and Muslims can concede all of Mandate Palestine (0.2 percent of the total Arab land) without even blinking. So why become consumed with such a marginal issue instead of staying focused on societal reform? In the first century of the debate that came to be known as the Arab Renaissance, sovereignty was never an issue. The main concern was how to modernize the interpretation of Islam in ways that make society compatible with modern times. Such debate is still required, but is always being suppressed in favor of importing Western problems and solutions that don't solve Arab and Muslim problems.

Imperialism, capitalism, the gap between high and low income, are not Arab or Muslim problems. Economics belong to modern states. When the economy is mature enough, it requires limits on excesses. Most Arabs and Muslims are not there yet.

The problem, therefore, is how can Arab and Muslim intellectuals get the Western Left off their backs and let the Arabs and Muslims fight their own fight for modernization? The Western Left behaves in such a patronizing way that, if you are Arab or Muslim, they talk to you like the pet that needs extra care. Some Arabs and Muslims -- especially the Muslim Brotherhood types and the evergreen Palestine victims -- enjoy such Western attention and naiveté and abuse it, often for their entryism (taking over Westerns governments from within, through lawful means such as elections).

How to get the Western Left to understand the Arab and Muslim world, and reality? It's a question I'm still scratching my head in pursuit of an answer.
