Saint Augustine (13 November 354 - 28 August 430) reminds us love for money trumping love for study was already a thing for students back in his day
12. Page 43. I began actively to set about the business of teaching literature and public speaking, which was the purpose for which I had come to Rome. At first I taught in my house, where I collected a number of pupils who had heard of me, and through them my reputation began to grow. But I now realized that there were difficulties in Rome with which I had not had to contend in Africa. True enough, I found that there was no rioting by young hooligans, but I was told that at any moment a number of students would plot together to avoid paying their master his fees and would transfer in a body to another. They were quite unscrupulous, and justice meant nothing to them compared with the love of money. There [...]St Augustine. Page 13. Continues from previous image. ...was hatred for them in my heart, and it was not unselfish hatred, for I suppose that I hated them more for what I should have to suffer from them than for the wrong they might do to any teacher . . . For their warped and crooked minds I still hate students like these, but I love them too, hoping to teach them to mend their ways, so that they may learn to love their studies more than money and love you, their God, still more, for you are the Truth, the Source of good that does not fail, and the Peace of purest innocence. But in those days I was readier to dislike them for fear of the harm they might cause me than to hope that they would become good for your sake.

Front page news today.
The Guardian newspaper front-page teaser occupies the top left corner. It features a portrait of Marjane Satrapi against a dark blue background. Satrapi is shown from the shoulders up, looking directly at the camera with a neutral expression, her dark hair framing her face. Beside the image, large pale-yellow and white text reads: “Marjane Satrapi. French-Iranian artist who created Persepolis dies aged 56.” A small yellow circular icon and the label “News” appear beneath the headline.Full-page Guardian newspaper obituary and appreciation article about Marjane Satrapi in The Guardian (Friday 5 June 2026). The headline, in large serif type on the left, reads: “Persepolis author ‘dies of sadness’ at 56 after loss of husband.” Beneath it is a byline by Emma Loffhagen and several columns of text discussing Satrapi’s life, career, and legacy.

Gumballs
BBC News post. post shows an older white couple standing together on a quiet high street near Romford Market. The woman wears a light grey hoodie and carries a patterned shoulder bag, while the man wears glasses, a dark polo shirt, and a light cardigan. Shops around them appear mostly closed, and a colourful gumball machine stands nearby. The headline reads, “We are very happy with Reform win,” alongside a reporter’s name.

'We are very happy with Reform win'

Gem O'Reilly
At Romford Market

I’m just stood at the start of Romford Market where all the stall owners are setting up. It’s a quiet start to the day and many of the high street shops are either not open yet or closed.

Kim and Lenny have lived in Romford for more than 40 years. They say it’s massively changed and the high street and market are suffering from rising rents and people having less in their pockets.

They both say they are pleased with Reform UK’s win here.

“We are very happy. It’s not been good lately and the town has deteriorated really badly,” says Kim.

“It’s sad to see the decline in the shops and the market used to be really bustling - that’s how we’d like to see it back again.”

A screenshot of The Guardian’s website in the Education section. The main headline reads: “Scott Galloway on the masculinity crisis: ‘I worry we are evolving a new breed of asexual, asocial males’.” Beneath it is a subheading about his book and theories on dating, crying, and the rise of Donald Trump. To the right of the main article is a large portrait photo of a bald man with a trimmed beard, looking serious against a textured blue background. Below the main story are three smaller headlines: “New data reveals Australia’s high-achieving Naplan schools for this year,” “The rise of deepfake pornography in schools: ‘One girl was so horrified she vomited’,” and “Teachers and parents in England: would you like a four-day working week to be introduced?” A fourth headline partially visible reads: “Folktales review – taking on tyranny of social media as teens learn to live like hunter-…”

Uncanny Bodies book in shrinkwrap next to press release leaf on top of a manila envelope. PENN STATE UNIVERSITY PRESS
UNCANNY BODIES
"A remarkably significant contribution to both disability studies and comics studies. The essays collected here interrogate how superhero comics have struggled with reconciling the fantasy of the superbody with a growing concern, among producers and readers, for a more diverse and more adequate treatment of disabilities ranging from autism and dissociative identity disorder to deafness and progressive muscular dystrophy. A truly eye-opening book!"
-Daniel Stein, University of Siegen
Superhero comics reckon with issues of corporeal control. And while they commonly deal in characters of exceptional or superhuman ability, they have also shown an increasing attention and sensitivity to diverse forms of disability, both physical and cognitive. The essays in this collection reveal how the superhero genre, in fusing fantasy with realism, provides a visual forum for engaging with issues of disability and intersectional identity (race, ethnicity, class, gender, and sexuality) and helps to imagine different ways of being in the world.

To me it seems like a failure of national information literacy that it took so many countries, including the UK, so long to pay more significant attention way earlier (that is if we are willing to take Google Trends data as a valid indicator of national interest on a topic).

Frequency of shabby, adj., 1750–2010
Screenshot. Frequency of shabby, adj., 1750–2010

* Occurrences per million words in written English

Historical frequency series are derived from Google Books Ngrams (version 2), a data set based on the Google Books corpus of several million books printed in English between 1500 and 2010.

The overall frequency for a given word is calculated by summing frequencies for the main form of the word, any plural or inflected forms, and any major spelling variations.

For sets of homographs (distinct entries that share the same word-form, e.g. mole, n.¹, mole, n.², mole, n.³, etc.), we have estimated the frequency of each homograph entry as a fraction of the total Ngrams frequency for the word-form. This may result in inaccuracies.

Smoothing has been applied to series for lower-frequency words, using a moving-average algorithm. This reduces short-term fluctuations, which may be produced by variability in the content of the Google Books corpus.

Simply astonishing. Maybe Lecturer A should not have to mark over 100 essays in a two-week window in the first place? Invest in qualified staff and reduce impossible workloads FFS www.kcl.ac.uk/about/strate...
Screenshot. King's College London page. Examples of effective practice

The following scenarios follow the above guidelines and offer insights into ways that academic staff can use AI transparently and in an assistive capacity, always ensuring human oversight and judgment remain central.
Scenario A – Scaling feedback while maintaining quality

Lecturer A is responsible for marking over 100 essays within a two-week window.

Conscious of the limitations this workload places on the depth of individual feedback, they adopt a hybrid approach using their university’s approved or supported LLM tool, Copilot.

Without ever uploading student work directly, Lecturer A composes an anonymised summary for each student, noting which marking criteria were met and the approximate percentage achieved for each. They input this summary alongside the official rubric into Copilot, prompting it to generate supportive, criterion-referenced feedback. This feedback is then carefully reviewed, adapted, and personalised before being uploaded to the marking platform.

Students are made aware of this process in advance and shown a demonstration, reinforcing transparency and trust.

Other faint lines show Maths consistently at 1st, Psychology 2nd, History dropping from 5th in 2024 to 9th in 2025, Literature declining after 2020 to stay near the lower end in place 11, and Geography (having held place 8 in 2017) remaining among the least popular subjects throughout the period.

Present from my parents, 6 January 1984. Adapted by Carlos Fernández Liria; illustrations by Fernando Aznar. In second photo note I highlighted a word I did not understand in this translated edition for young readers.
A Spanish-language edition of Moby Dick by Herman Melville with a bright yellow cover. The title "Moby Dick" is in bold blue letters, and a comic-style illustration shows a man with long dark hair and a red face looking at a sailing ship. A speech bubble says, “¡Buen viaje y viento en popa!” (“Have a good trip and fair winds!”). Below the image is the logo for “Colección Historias BRUGUERA” and “Biblioteca Verde.” The book shows signs of wear at the corners.pages 16 and 17 of Moby Dick by Herman Melville. The left page ends in a paragraph and includes a small black-and-white illustration of two men sitting by a fireplace, one smoking a pipe and the other speaking. A speech bubble in the illustration reads: “Mañana tomaremos el paqueteboat para Nantucket y allí buscaremos un buque ballenero donde embarcarnos.” The right page starts Chapter 3, titled “El viaje a Nantucket.” A reader's fingers are holding the book open at the bottom center. The background is a textured blue fabric.
Back cover of a Spanish-language illustrated edition of Moby Dick by Herman Melville, published by Bruguera as part of the "Colección Historias – Biblioteca Verde." The background is yellow, with a black-and-white illustration in the center showing a group of sailors on a whaleboat attacking a whale. One sailor is shouting: “¡Ya está muerta! ¡Su corazón ha reventado!” Above the illustration is the following text:

> Presentamos una nueva manera de leer.
Las ilustraciones y el texto forman una misma cosa, un todo, un libro, este libro.
Este libro se lee así…
A passage of narrative text below the heading describes Stubb striking the whale with a harpoon, searching its body, and finding its heart destroyed. At the bottom, the price is listed as “250 PTAS.” and “IMPRESO EN ESPAÑA, PRINTED IN SPAIN.”

Increasingly irked by the usage of "deploy" to refer to skills learned at university.
A screenshot from Google Books Ngram Viewer, showing the frequency of the word "deploy" (and its various capitalizations) in English-language books from 1800 to 2019 showing dominance of lowercase "deploy". The lowercase "deploy" (red line) is by far the most commonly used form. Its usage remained relatively low and steady until around the 1950s, after which it began rising sharply, peaking around 2010. The sharp increase in "deploy" usage from the 1950s onward coincides with the Cold War era, military expansion, and later, technological contexts (e.g., software deployment).
