Today marks 30 years since we identified the apicoplast, a relict plastid in human and animal parasites (PMID 8632819). Apicoplasts are the target of the widely used antimalarial prophylactic doxycycline, which has saved many thousands of malaria infections.

Find a doctor who listens, it matters! If I hadn’t found a doctor who listened and ran the right tests to find my diagnosis of pernicious anemia, I’m convinced my quality of life would have never improved.

new reference genomes for Plasmodium ovale wallikeri and Plasmodium malariae (& Pf too) direct from blood taken from children carrying these parasites -- this was done with as little as 2 ng of DNA. all sorts of craziness going on in the subtelomeric regions ...

✅ 2025: Victories for disease control! The world scored major victories for disease control and elimination. 🥳 Maldives became the first country to achieve “triple elimination” of mother-to-child transmission of HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B. 🥳 Burundi, Egypt and Fiji eliminated trachoma.

Dr. Steven Kho gave a captivating presentation in Session 6 on the splenic biomass in acute clinical Pv cases. No spleen leads to more circulating parasites and lower total biomass. And quantified in patients with a spleen around 88% biomass resides in the spleen and only 12% in circulation!
