Arguing since birth. Urban planning, politics, weather, Drag Race, and photography are all fair game. Opinions are strictly my own—unless others agree. I assume that strings of emojis in people's bios are their washing instructions

I think we are allowed to be aghast at and critical of a President who's utterances are so hateful, garbled, and ambiguous that they can easily be construed and, indeed, *were* construed by his rabid, cult-like supporters to mean that he is okay with major American cities being entirely destroyed

Ok, I'm not *really* making this argument, but I just feel like this is the most relevant this GIF has ever been and I wanted to take the excuse to use it

Heads up! A fire near I-80 is causing bad and worsening air quality across the northern half of Berkeley, and I suspect the bad air will spread further before dissipating Consider closing your windows and running an air purifier (DIY or otherwise) www.berkeleyscanner.com/2026/09/30/c...

Perhaps it is the least worst or only physically/financially feasible option, but I must confess I still have some pretty deep skepticism that controlled burns in the middle of an urbanized area are the optimal way to reduce fuel loads But I'm open to being told I'm wrong and outside my lane

Unpopular opinion: people who take buses deserve places to sit, and until we start forcing drivers to let homeless people sleep in their back seats, bus riders (who are also often low income) shouldn't be treated as second class citizens who are expected to bear the full brunt of bad housing policy

God, I've heard about this so many times and I was not prepared to see it on video. I involuntarily, physically recoiled. If someone did that to me, I'd be immediately removing their arms and might even go into fight-or-flight Sandra Bullock mode:

Notice CalMatters' clever sleight of hand with this headline. They don't say "Tech CEOs" or "Silicon Valley elite," they say Silicon Valley and use the word "it," thereby subtly misleading readers into a framing where Democrats are losing Silicon Valley workers or as a region, which is very wrong

Hours later and air quality appears to remain degraded all over the central Bay Area from this prescribed burn Granted, it's in a moderate category, but it still (in my mind) raises questions around whether this was the ideal approach/timing for managing Angel Island vegetation

What on earth were @calfire.bsky.social and California State Parks thinking by moving forward with a prescribed burn on a day where winds are slack, temperatures are dangerously hot, and people are desperate to ventilate their apartments? @buffywicks.bsky.social @jessearreguin.bsky.social

Given that Gleick doesn't seem to know that some of the biggest Berkeley bike advocates (both IRL and online) are women, I'm not sure whether to chalk this up to ignorance flavor ice cream, misogyny flavor, or some ignorance/misogyny soft-serve twist Good to know climate action = ice cream flavors

My only gripe with your posts is that you missed the opportunity to say: Wake Up, California, a new NIMBY group, just dropped. The name of the NIMBY group is "Wake Up, California" and it just dropped

Are you using Opus 4.8 High? I asked it to analyze it and it got it precisely correct in one shot P.S. I had to truncate the alt text.
A conversation with Clause Opus 4.8 High where I provide a screen shot of my original post and ask it to explain. It returns this text:

I'll explain the literary backbone first, then check what the current-events part is referring to, since "the Natalie Harp story" and "IYKYK" clearly point to something specific and recent.
Searched the web

This is a two-layer joke that mashes up Tolkien with current politics, and "IYKYK" ("if you know, you know") is the poster's way of admitting you need both layers to get it.

The literary layer comes from The Hobbit. Smaug the dragon appears invincible, his underbelly plated with armor and encrusted gems — except for one bare patch that Bilbo spots. Word of that single weak spot reaches Bard the Bowman, a man of Lake-town, who kills Smaug by firing the Black Arrow — his last arrow, a prized heirloom that had never missed — straight into that one vulnerable point as the dragon attacks the town. So the archetype is: a seemingly unstoppable power brought down by one precise shot to its only weakness.

The political layer maps onto that. Panzer is casting Trump's presidency as Smaug (the armored, seemingly untouchable dragon), Senator Jon Ossoff as Bard (the one who might land the killing shot), and "the Natalie Harp story" as the Black Arrow (the specific piece of ammunition that finds the weak spot).

The Harp reference is recent... [summary of recent news story]

So the whole tweet is saying: it would be both hilarious and maddening if this one seemingly minor jab — the Harp story — turned out to be the precise, fatal shot that brings down the whole "invincible" presidency, exactly the way one arrow felled Smaug. The "mildly infuriating" part is the wry acknowledgment that if that's what does it, it'll feel absurdly small relative to everything else.

Hmm, that's a pretty stark pattern. Why is that? *Goes to Google Maps* Hmm, those areas have an awful lot of urban prairie... disinvestment due to segregation? *goes to ArcGIS dot map* Yup. Segregation.

Every time I hear someone talk about how allowing new high-density housing or reducing parking will "destroy" their neighborhood's "quality of life," I think about maps like this one

Reminder for everyone, but especially folks in the Midwest and Northeast today: A box fan with a MERV13 filter taped to the back is 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝘀, 𝗶𝗳 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 than a dedicated (and expensive) air purifier. www.pscleanair.gov/694/DIY-Air-...

"Melt Ice" poster. The word melt has an American flag pattern within the letters. The word ice is formed out of melting and dripping pieces of ease. A hand with deep brown skin holds the torch from the Statue of Liberty beneath the letter C, with the flame melting the ice.

One of the chief cheerleaders for exactly what is happening right now died yesterday and you pretty much had only nice things to say about him If these things are truly 'beyond horrific,' then how can you eulogize the people who enable them? What message does that send?

You do realize that Google, Amazon, Microsoft and pretty much all software companies have been built (at least initially) off open source projects and code for decades, right? There's a reason this meme is popular:
