Cement production fell 12%, crude steel 4% and oil refinery output 7%, indicating emission reductions across the board. 26516
Eric Goetz @ericgoetzmusic.bsky.social · 21/08/2026I'm not sure about the math, but the protein folding could have value for medicine and for bio-engineering to clean up pollution. And I believe AI has allowed us to speed up innovation in materials-science and fusion research. But, these are guesses as a non-expert who casually follows it. 110
Eric Goetz @ericgoetzmusic.bsky.social · 21/08/2026Agreed, though I think there's a corollary: Which is that we'll see an explosion of new ideas, conceptual breakthroughs, and artforms—some of them might be even good ones. 120
Eric Goetz @ericgoetzmusic.bsky.social · 19/08/2026Also the weight and aerodynamic drag, compared to a conventional car roof. If you're adding weight or drag, that will certainly offset the 150-250 watts roof panels add into the system under perfect conditions (sunny day, ideal sunlight angle, etc). 200
Eric Goetz @ericgoetzmusic.bsky.social · 12/08/2026I love this "mini-essay" on how technology is a much broader term than how we usually think of it. I love that Le Guin has been getting her long well-deserved acclaim. I struggle with her fiction, but's a me-problem. She was a brilliant thinker. 000
Eric Goetz @ericgoetzmusic.bsky.social · 12/08/2026Yeah, I see science news about "reactor in a shipping container" tech every few years. Would be a game-changer if they crack it. 010
Eric Goetz @ericgoetzmusic.bsky.social · 12/08/2026¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Just implement time-of-use metering with critical peak pricing and the market will sort it out. Grid and home batteries are about to get really cheap. 000
Eric Goetz @ericgoetzmusic.bsky.social · 12/08/2026There's a difference between advocating building nuclear now (solar PV + batteries are *way* cheaper and will keep getting cheaper, short-term), and investing in research in better reactor designs. I wouldn't call myself a "nuclear power advocate", but I'd definitely advocate for research. 000

The Rhine just hit a record-low water level in Cologne, while the Danube has fallen far enough to disrupt nuclear power generation. Drought isn’t just an environmental problem. It quickly becomes an economic one. Source: guidocioni.substack.com/p/european-r... 17939
Eric Goetz @ericgoetzmusic.bsky.social · 12/08/2026Agreed that nuclear is a good technology. I just wish it scaled down. In the US, at least, a new nuclear plant would be a "megaproject" the would have to fight a ton of NIMBYism. I'm from Washington state, where the WPPSS debacle still looms large in the minds of people my age or older. 100
Eric Goetz @ericgoetzmusic.bsky.social · 16/07/2026Even if you replace the solar panels and battery storage four times within the lifespan of a nuclear reactor, solar is still about 5x cheaper (remember, nuclear needs engineers and security to staff it 24x7)—and solar's price is still dropping. But you're right about land-use. 110
Eric Goetz @ericgoetzmusic.bsky.social · 16/07/2026It's not even close. Solar is like 5X cheaper, even when you include the cost of battery storage. And that's only getting cheaper, while nuclear is getting more expensive. 000

Eric Goetz @ericgoetzmusic.bsky.social · 20/04/2026For sure. I make no claims that it's a good business idea, just trying to give a back-of-the-napkin level of effort/cost, without resorting to paying to re-edit the book and having Wheaton re-record it from scratch. 110
