This plus when it unlocks tie-ins/callbacks/fixes something thorny I wrote earlier. Literally why I keep writing. There's no other feeling like it.

It's the detergent. Buy the expensive shit that makes you wince a little at the price. Your dishes will come out clean and you'll save so much time/hassle. The most expensive dishwasher you can find will still fail to clean properly if you use shoddy detergent.

Just really awesome how our financial elite just spent the last several decades admonishing people for pursing the humanities and creative fields, and are now suddenly pedaling the idea that "there are no good ideas anymore" after spending the last 5 years laying off everybody with a brain

When Rob Reiner was on his all-time epic run at the start of his career, he had an opportunity to read a script that was looking for a production partner, and he lost his mind for it. He decided Castle Rock had to have it, no matter what.

This edition of BLACK STONE HEART is seriously one of the most beautiful things on my shelves. The writing and story itself is (obviously) fantastic. The binding is gorgeous. The typeset and pages are gorgeous. The art is gorgeous, and there's even an insane fold-out map.

One of the many reasons AI can't produce good writing is it can't hate its own writing. It can't think to itself "Maybe I'm illiterate" during the writing process. And that's essential

I had a long talk with someone yesterday about how all prior logic and norms about the labor market have been called off because capital is in the final push to finally casualize white collar workers the way they’ve long wanted to do. From AI to non-competes to this. They smell blood in the water.

I truly think self-discipline and delaying gratification are concepts a ton of people just never learn. I didn't have a choice. We didn't have much money growing up. I spent my 20s broke af Im pretty grateful for that now. I sit on purchases for a long time and decide if I really need it.

Are you on generic Vyvanse? There was a nationwide recall in the fall that a lot of people missed because they put out the news generally but didn’t tell people who were on it directly. Check your lot numbers here: www.pharmacy.ca.gov/about/recall...

To me, Christmas isn't about perfection or consumerism. It's about family togetherness. It's about dancing with yetis. It's about making ill-advised, Faustian bargains with the Peppermint Man. It's about shrinking down the super rich and trapping them in snow globe pocket dimensions.

Wild, but me and my friend group just rewatched Johnny Tsunami on a lark a couple of days ago. For a made for TV Disney movie from the late 90s, it held up remarkably well. Tagawa steals every scene he's in.

There is a some amount real social utility in being able to wager on the outcome of arbitrary things. That is to say I don't think the concept of market making here is inherently bad. But the current schtick is rapidly turning into exploitative gambling with the barest veneer of financialization.

There's more nuance here if you really dig into the implications of totems and dream layering, and the meta implications of what are either legit criticisms with the first half of the film, or utter genius, depending on whether or not we're watching a dream. (oh, no. Am I a reply guy now?)

Saved by Stoppard
Sir, In 1993 my wife and I went to see the first production of Arcadia by Tom Stoppard (obituary, Dec I), and in the interval I experienced a Damascene conversion. As a clinical scientist I was trying to understand the enigma of the behaviour of breast cancer, the assumption being that it grew in a linear trajectory spitting off metastases on its way. In the first act of Arcadia, Thomasina asks her tutor, Septimus: "If there is an equation for a curve like a bell, there must be an equation for one like a bluebell, and if a bluebell, why not a rose?" With that Stoppard explains chaos theory, which better explains the behaviour of breast cancer. At the point of diagnosis, the cancer must have already scattered cancer cells into the circulation that nest latent in distant organs. The consequence of that hypothesis was the birth of "adjuvant systemic chemotherapy", and rapidly we saw a striking fall of the curve that illustrated patients' survival.
Stoppard never learnt how many lives he saved by writing Arcadia.
