Just saw someone say their AI runs their fantasy football team and I can’t stop laughing. Like, I’m sure everyone’s doing it or something but it’s very funny to me that pretending to be a team manager was so hard that you needed to pretend to pretend to be a team manager

Update: You’ll be relieved to know the coroner’s report came back and cleared the officer. She is already back on the street disabling her body camera and shooting dogs.

The Nathan Fillion cop show is being watched in my presence. A perp died in custody, seemingly of natural causes, but they’re investigating whether a cop is responsible. Everyone is SO WORRIED she will be held liable. It is Very Serious. This show is set in America in 2026. It is not a comedy.

It’s so annoying when you vote for someone’s death but have to kill him yourself.

Whoever it is, since I’m too online I suspect I will have already heard. Which is too bad. I would love to find out via a breathless text or phone call.

It’s probably Wizard of Oz because it used to be on TV every year, but The Music Man and Mary Poppins must be in the running, too.

CinemaScore measures how well — and how accurately — a movie was sold to audiences. The only trailer I ever saw for DIGGER just emphasized that it starred Tom Cruise. I am forced to conclude, then, that DIGGER does not actually star Tom Cruise.

The last one in particular — I had no idea Betty White was so involved in the early days of TV and was on the air live 5 1/2 hours a day *6* days a week. I didn't know Irna Phillips, inventor of the soap opera, at all. (The first one, The Guiding Light, was about a pastor, hence the organ music.)

I've read three books by Jennifer Keishin Armstrong — - Seinfeldia (history of Seinfeld the show) - Mary and Lou and Rhoda and Ted (history of Mary Tyler Moore Show) - When Women Invented Television (pioneers Betty White, Hazel Scott, Gertrude Berg, Irna Phillips) — and all were great.

Deeply strange British horror melodrama THE APPOINTMENT (1981, not released) is on Criterion Channel! A man dreams of disaster the night before a long drive. Surreal, comically so at times, w/ overwrought music—but legit eerie. Faint TWIN PEAKS, KILL LIST vibes. Only movie this guy ever made.

The print hasn't been cropped, it was shot for '80s TV. Even without knowing this I noticed at least one moment between scenes that felt like a commercial break. www.bfi.org.uk/features/app...

The vanishing British horror: unearthing The Appointment
The Wicker Man star Edward Woodward headlines this story of strange psychic forces from the start of the video nasty era. But since its release, The Appointment has been extremely difficult to see.

I checked Criterion to see what was new this month, saw this near the top, and immediately watched it. I have a bad enough memory (for movies) that I'd forgotten most of the details and only remembered that it was bizarre.

Incidentally, don't pay no never mind to Criterion Channel's description of THE APPOINTMENT. As usual, if you were to watch the movie expecting to see the picture painted by that blurb, you would be disappointed.

I saw THE APPOINTMENT in 2022 when someone was tweeting about it being on YouTube. I watched it again tonight. Folks, it has so many weird choices. It may try your patience, and you may not like it, but you will remember it (it's pretty PG13, fwiw). Very Fantastic Fest (complimentary).

It’s not just that everyone is talking loudly on their phones on the train, I want to know who they’re talking to. It’s 7:45 in the morning! Who could possibly want to speak to you right now?? Whose morning are you ruining??

Revisited Marjane Satrapi's demented THE VOICES, which delighted us to no end at Sundance '14. Ryan Reynolds is a placidly likable man fresh out of the loony bin who hears the title characters. It's a full-on horror comedy (even a romcom for a minute), and it's pretty funny, bloody, surprising, &c.

There can’t be a surprise ending for a story that has no stakes. The word they’re looking for here is “Arbitrary.”

What's funny about "shut down the fraternities, they are mostly rape factories and serve no legitimate useful purpose" is that it's been the sensible argument for, what, 50 years? Longer?

Sometimes it’s fun to ignore the huge watchlist and watch a movie that just popped into my head. Tonight was BABY MAMA (2008), which I hadn’t seen since it came out. I’m guessing I gave it a B-. It has some very funny moments amidst much cheerful blandness and a stupidly tidy resolution.

In 2 Star 2 Trek: Khan's Wrath, the guy played by Paul Winfield phasers himself rather than kill Kirk. The result of being shot with the phaser gun is that Paul Winfield disappears. Just vanishes. I feel like there should be some kind of residue on account of the conservation of mass and so forth.

All this DIGGER talk reminds me of the last Iñárritu movie I saw, BARDO — not the movie (feh) but the text conversation I had with Luke Mullen just as the screening was about to start. We were working out whether I'd be able to stay in his guest room, which was occupied at the time:
Screenshot of text messages

SENDER: Hey I think we've got this worked out, Wampler is going to stay with our two friends while you're in town, no worries.

SENDER: Speaking of, have you spoken to them recently?

ME: To whom?

SENDER: (Extremely Wampler voice) my balls

ME: Good grief

ME: He's a bad influence on you

My most enduring memory of this show: I was about 13 and a guy at church said his sister was working on a new teen TV show that was going to be different from other teen shows. It would be realistic, down-to-earth, showing normal teens doing normal things. And then the show was SAVED BY THE BELL.

It sounds like I'm saying the bug was haunted for some time. That may have been the case, but I meant that I was haunted. Anyway, yeah, THE WRATH OF KHAAAAANN is pretty good. Khan hammier than Kirk. Without checking I'm going to assume the Trekkers of 1982 loved it and had no complaints.

Now watching STAR TREK II, which I've actually seen parts of, as a kid, on my cousins' HBO. All I remember is a bug going in someone's ear and being haunted by that for some time.
