Almost 100,000 women in the U.S. are in jail. Most of them are legally innocent and are trapped behind bars awaiting trial — largely because they cannot afford bail.
Detailed view of the jail slice of the pie chart showing that 95,000 women are held in jails. Chart breaks down which authorities they're held for and the underlying offenses, using the newest data available in 2026

Poets would also make pretty good heroes but nothing exciting happens around poets on purpose. They are either being protected from danger or danger is being protected from poets.

Not to take away from celebrating Carson, but she's a "former professor" here in large part because the university shut down her department and cancelled its classes. What pride does the institution claim now—years later—when austerity is forcing other scholars out? What does that 'pride' do?

Many congratulations to Anne Carson for the well-deserved Nobel Prize! This is also great news for Translation, Classics, Poetry, the breaking of generic and disciplinary boundaries, and the fact that you don't have to fit a pre-existing mould to have a brilliant, successful career.

There’s something maddening—and often sexist—about senior scholars citing junior scholars for minor facts while ignoring arguments directly relevant to their own. It’s scholarly gaslighting: cite enough to seem fair, never enough to acknowledge the ideas.
