For years, I have used "is there a generic 'solve problems' move (modelled on act under fire)" as my first rubric for "is this PbtA hack worth my time". If yes, then it isn't - this has proved a very useful rule.

I suppose the reason I reacted negatively to your original post is that I find the framing of artists as pseudo-philosophers contributes to the very issue you talk about with artists being treated as special magical creativity machines.

See, this is exactly why I say proficient design work is undervalued - it is a skillset given so little credence that a lot of people don't even think about it existing. And just like you say, design is a skill that can be trained.

Idk, it's admittedly a fair few years ago but I had to go abroad to find an art education that actually taught technical skill at all. Over here, the best you'd get is "here's a studio, idk figure it out yourself, art is about self expression" so that mindset persists

I'm thinking more prosaically of things like the received wisdom in ttrpgs being: you need to have full color Illustration in your book, regardless of quality - even if the art is poorly done, if you want it to sell it absolutely needs to be full-color paintings. No need for art that tells a story

I suspect the disagreement here is what we're putting into the box labeled "expressing something about the human condition". Making art that doesn't look same-y; producing interesting, well-considered, engaging art? I'd put all that into "technical skill". Good art is a process of decision making.

The idea that art used to be about saying things about the human condition is, bluntly, false. Newspaper illustration, portraits of rich folks, state propaganda, religious iconography - working artists have "painted dragons" throughout history. Art is a craft - like carpentry. And that is joyous.

I had the collected editions from the scholastic book fairs in the early 00’s and held on to them and passed them on to my now 10 year old son who read them so much some of them fell apart. This panel is my all time favorite as a father now.

I do understand: you want permission. There’s a machine in the corner wrapped in human skin that makes things out of shit and blood to look like whatever you want (as long as you don’t look too closely). You gave one to your teacher and they didn’t notice. Your boss told you to use it after they laid off half the team and it was fine. You fed one to your kids and they liked it. You want to know you can use it sometimes without me thinking less of you. You don’t need me to believe it’s useful, you just want me to be polite about it.

But I am a hater, and I will not be polite. The machine is disgusting and we should break it. The people who build it are vapid shit-eating cannibals glorifying ignorance. I strongly feel that this is an insult to life itself.
